Sitatet vi fikk: Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason. Husker ikke sitatet ordrett, men ca noe slik: Without tools a man is nothing, with tools he is all. Noe i den duren. Håper det var litt til hjelp iallefall Edit: Klikk for å se/fjerne innholdet nedenfor Racial and ethnic discrimination Racism – Prejudice and discrimination based on race According to the UN there is no difference between racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination. Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason. ~Abraham Joshua Heschel What is racial and ethnic discrimination? The UN states that there is no distinct between racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination. In my opinion, that definition is a bit too loose. Racial discrimination refers to the act of treating people different on the grounds of various sets of characteristics such as skin color, length, facial feature, eye color and gender. Ethnic discrimination on the other hand, refers to the act of treating people different on the basis of ancestry. However, one can argue that ethnic discrimination is a part of racial discrimination mainly because an ethnic group also can be defined by a common culture, language or religious view. Therefore, I’d say that ethnic discrimination is a form of racial discrimination. Both racial and ethnic discrimination is racism. Racism in the United States of America has been a huge problem since the first European colonists settled here. The occupants of American land, the Native Americans, were the first ones to be discriminated against, in what was soon to become America. The European settlers made war on the Native Americans, or Indians, to obtain as much of the American territory as possible. These wars led to the death of tens of thousands Native Americans, and the ones who survived were banished to Indian reservations. In the early 1600s the first slaves were brought to America. They were mainly African prisoners of war, who were sold to the Americans and the Europeans. The work they were intended to do, was working on the cotton and tobacco fields. This trend went on for many years. Not until the Civil Right Movements in the middle of the 1900th century were the racial discrimination banned by law in America. Anti-Semitism is prejudice and discrimination against Jews, and has been a fact since early in the 1000th century. The most famous incident of hatred against Jews is probably Adolf Hitler’s regime in Germany, who planned and executed The Holocaust. This plan, which was referred to by the Nazi’s as “The final solution to the Jewish Question”, caused the death of over 6 million Jews during World War 2. Apartheid was a system of legal segregation in South Africa, where the black people were inferior to the white people. All public services such as education and medical care were segregated, and the standard for the black services were lower than the whites. Apartheid even established Black reserves, which is similar to the Indian reserves, to separate blacks and whites from each other. In addition, the blacks got their right to vote limited to the Black Reserves. The system was abolished in 1994. Nevertheless, the Apartheid system still forms the South African society, even though it is banned. The country is still strongly colored by class distinctions. Blacks that live in poverty amounts to over 80%. In Norway, discrimination on basis of gender has been on the agenda lately because there are more men than women in management positions. This statistic led to a new law called gender-quota. This law was composed to promote and encourage equality between genders. I think this approach to the problem is wrong. The law does give woman a better opportunity to get better jobs, but on what conditions does the woman get the job? Is it because the woman is qualified for the job, or is it because she is a woman? In some cases it is because the woman is qualified, but in other cases it is just because she is a woman. Does that approach to the problem solve it permanently, or does it fix the statistic which says women are under-represented? I think the latter answers the question. I think the word “race” is a wrong word to use about human beings seeing that it has a negative effect on its surroundings. There are no races among humans. Therefore I think we should use more precise and better fitting words to describe different people. Very few know how to differ between potential races anyway. For example, if the difference is skin color, why can’t we use the word skin color instead of race? Or if the difference is gender, why can’t we say that instead? Nevertheless, future science may prove that there actually are different races that are generally better qualified/equipped on certain areas than other races. If that happens, it is important that the population don’t live under the understanding that “all men are of equal value because all men are created equal”. That would entail an understanding that says we are not of the same value if a potential race is in fact better qualified on certain areas than other potential races. In my opinion, the best way to deal with racism is through acceptance of distinctions among humans. Prejudice is the main issue here, because prejudice is one of the major causes to racism and discrimination. Regarding prejudice, ignorance is the factor that needs to be removed. One cannot make a good decision without relevant knowledge, and the only way to obtain knowledge is through education. When it comes to racial prejudice, it often involves lots of stereotyping. Everyone belonging to the same race is considered to be similar. The important thing is to look at the individual, not at the potential race or group he or she may or may not belong to. To summarize I’d say racism is a liability to the society. Why? Throughout history racism has caused nothing but death and suffering. In the words of Abraham Joshua Heschel: “Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason.” Konklusjonen i denne teksten suger, skrev noe helt annen på den ordentlige prøven, men resten var jeg rimelig fornøyd med Burde holde til en 4 ++ håper jeg Endret 15. mai 2008 av -MK- Lenke til kommentar
