Making my old SN95G5v2 silent as the wind…

Hi all!

 

As the title hints, I need some guiding on how to make my old shuttle silent (enough for my girlfriend to accept its presence in the living room) so that I can convert this old gaming machine to a media center machine.

 

I’ve read a fair amount of posts in the forum, and I’ll try and refer as much as possible to these, but I’m also quite the noob in this as I have never built or modded a computer much except building them. Therefore, my own thread

 

The machine is in it’s original state at the moment, but hoping to fix that!

Specifications:

 

Shuttle SN95G5 V2

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 64 bit 512k L2 Cache

Can’t remember if I have one 1024 chip or two 512… it doesn’t matter much anyway. Will update this.

Ati Radeon 9800 Pro

 

1 IDE HD

1 SATA HD

1 DVD Burner

 

I’ll address the points of cooling/noise (ho ho) and update them when your enlightening posts roll over me This post will be my work list and a work in progress as I go on…

 

General benchmarks

 

I’m really new to this so if anyone has some pointers to software I should use to monitor temperatures, testing tools etc, I’ll add these here.

 

Power Supply

 

The original PSU is probably one of the worst heat factors in the machine. It’s very hot to touch and I assume the noise is bad as well. I haven’t been able to find a replacement from any of the local webshops (I live in Norway) as all the silentX PSUs are not compatible with my model.

Harddrive

 

It has two older drives in it at the moment, one IDE and one SATA I think. Looking to replace both with one new HD. Most of my friends point me towards Samsung Spinpoint and from what I’ve read, this is fair. I won’t give up the CD/DVD to fit into a cooling case (or atleast I don’t plan to), and since there is not much room for other modifications in the smaller slot, I’m unsure of what else can be done and if it’s worth the effort doing much.

 

Graphic card

 

Got a semi old gamer card (Ati Radeon 9800 Pro). For my purpose as a media center, do I need a card with a fan? Playing music and those legally downloaded movies will be its major tasks.

 

CPU fan - ICE

 

Replacing this? Replacing the fan?

 

Additional fans

 

Adding more fans or cooling on chipset or other strange places?

Først og fremst bør du vel finne ut hva som bråker i PC-en.

Har selv en eldre shuttle her, og den er ikke så veldig bråkete, men når den ble satt i et skap ble den veldig var (Det var ubehagelig å ta på kabinettet når den hadde stått på ei stund!).

Løsningen på mitt problem ble å borre et hul bak i skapet og montere ei vifte der, som jeg så kjørte på enten 5V eller 7V, dette ble ganske stille, og maskinen holdt seg "kald", også under spilling.
