In the mid 1990s, if someone lifted the receiver on the phone while you were connected to the internet, you'd be instantly disconnected. Big downloads like Doom, which uncompressed is a massive 13 megabytes(!), took more than 3 hours to complete on a reasonably fast 9600 bit/s modem, and more than 6 hours on a 4800 bit/s modem. Faster modems already existed, but they were still pretty expensive. Besides, why in the world anyone in their right mind would ever need a faster connection for their home computer than 9600 bit/s anyway is far beyond me!
