In the movie, the relationship between the British and the Irish is presented as very tensed. The Irish want freedom and the British want to keep the Irish British. The Irish feel ignored and suppressed by the British and unequal to them. The British police and law system is presented as a desperate, blood-thirsty system, wanting people to blame rather than finding the guilty. The police use the term “The goal sanctifies the funds” as excuse to perform highly irregular procedures of interrogation to make Gerry and his mates scapegoats. Even though the IRA took the blame on themselves, the police ignored them and proceeded with their lynch against the Guilford Four and the Maguire Seven.

Jeg gjorde klar utstyret mitt, men plutselig kom det en søt liten gutt som ikke kunne være mer enn 6 år, med lyst hår og fregner. Han spurte "hvolfol fiskel du i ølkenen?" mens han smilte blidt og undrende. Jeg ble GAL av raseri og slo han ihjel med de fantastiske lilla skoene mine!!!!! Ingen jævla drittunge skal få ødelegge fisketuren min!!!!
