In Lost Odyssey the player takes control of Kaim, a man who has lived for 1,000 years. The game's story revolves around the many generations of which Kaim is a part, his loves and losses and conflicts in a world nearing a "mystical industrial revolution". Lost Odyssey's story is being penned by the award-winning Japanese novelist, Kiyoshi Shigematsu who is working directly with the game's producer Hironobu Sakaguchi on the story sequences. Heading up the artistic demands of the title is famed Japanese comic artist, Takehiko Inoue, while famed composer Nobuo Uematsu has been recruited to create a more contemporary soundtrack.

Mistwalker is developing the title, with cooperation with a studio named Feel Plus, a subsidiary of Microsoft created specifically to aid Mistwalker. Feel Plus is made up of around 40 former Nautilus/Sacnoth developers, most famous for the cult favorite Shadow Hearts RPG series. (Sacnoth was officially announced as being dissolved in 2007.) Former Square employees at Microsoft are also involved. It has been confirmed that the game will come on 4 Dual Layer DVDs, more than any Xbox 360 game to date.

Outlook

Lost Odyssey looks and feels like an unofficial Final Fantasy for the Xbox 360. The battles are straight-forward yet offer a solid amount of depth, the story simultaneously epic and melodramatic, and the presentation at times is simply brilliant. There are still some issues that need to be cleaned up before the game’s target release by the end of the year, but with so many great games coming out this holiday we almost wish Microsoft would push back Lost Odyssey, take the time to polish it and ensure it reaches its full potential. We have our doubts that the game will become a major hit with the Xbox 360 audience, but what the hell – their loss. Sascha Lichtenstein

Other features in both battle (the "Guard Condition" meter that acts as a secondary HP shield for both enemy and ally parties) and storytelling (the virtual novella "A Thousand Years of Dreams," which tells of Kaim's past experiences) make up more of the game, and show that it's not quite the rush-job some might have expected, in spite of some odd blemishes. At the very least, those looking for something a little more grown-up than Blue Dragon, but still as Final Fantasy-like as ever, should still keep an eye on Lost Odyssey.
