Gimlisonofgloin: Litt lese stoff

Det kan være trojan horse eller worms.

Worms

A worm invades a computer system and uses the system’s resources to replicate itself but does not infect other programs. It merely copies itself to and from disks, or across network connections. The most notorious attack was the Internet WORM of 1988. Robert Morris, a graduate student at Cornell University, released a program which spread throughout the Internet. Within hours nearly 10 percent of the network was infected. Computer systems had to be shutdown or taken off-line.

The Internet WORM created a buffer overflow attack on an older version of the finger daemon program. The daemon used a flaw in the sendmail program to execute itself and run the worm’s malicious code. These vulnerabilities still exist in some older versions of sendmail today. Buffer overflow is a common deficiency that hackers still use to exploit software deficiencies. (Denning, 1999, p. 281)

Trojan Horses

A Trojan horse is a program that pretends to do one thing, while sneakily doing something else. Trojan horses are not like viruses in that they typically do not replicate themselves. Far from being innocent though, Trojan horses can be just as destructive. One of the most treacherous types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to clean your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer. Antivirus programs don't usually recognize Trojan horses because they don't operate like conventional viruses. Most antivirus programs only recognize very common Trojan horses like Back Orifice.

In networked environments where information is shared and communicated over wide areas, Trojan Horses are easily distributed and have ample opportunity to cause harm. For example, a Trojan Horse could be introduced as an authorized user prepares to download intellectual property such as a computer program or entertainment product. The intruding software could surreptitiously transmit the program to a third party, thus undermining the integrity of the licensed transaction and making it impossible to tell exactly who has gained access to the information and what actions an individual actually took and is accountable for.

One of the earlier versions was the Simpsons Trojan which executed its payload immediately. When it executed, a message dialog box would notify the user that there should be no unauthorized use of this file. When the user clicked OK, an MS-DOS window appeared showing that all the files were deleted. The time necessary to damage the system is less than 20 seconds. Infected users usually need to reinstall the operating system and all applications. This program uses the deltree.exe program to delete files. (PC Computing, 1998)

Two of the more widely known Trojan horses are Back Orifice and Netbus...They both run like a server on your system. Initially a "back door" is opened on an infected PC to make access from outside possible. A hacker can than use client software to do virtually anything on your system, including deleting files.

Disse "filene" skaper ikke noen problemer for meg (foreløpig), men firewallen oppdager dem når jeg starter windows xp. Får da at finnes C:Dokuments and Settings/navn/temp/ men denne katalogen finnes ikke.
