The Irish Republican Army(IRA) is a paramilitary movement from Northern Ireland. They fight for a joint irish republic, indipendent from Great Britain. Since 1969, IRA has been torn apart into many different groups. They all use the IRA-name in some way. In a surprising announcement on the 28th of Juli 2005, the Provisional IRA said they would no longer fight with weapons, only by democratic means. Great Britains Prime Minister Tony Blair and the leader of Sinn Fein Gerry Adams were both pleased by this decision. Only groups that went their own way after 1997 still operate under the IRA-name, but these groups aren`t active.

IRAs roots go way back to the uprising in 1796. Throughout the 19th Century there were many uprisings. After the Easter Rising in 1916 it was proclamed that the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army were too become one organisation. Gradually they became IRA, officially from 1919. IRA continued the armed fight against the british, but they changed their strategy. They no longer started large uprisings, instead they began with guerrilla warfare, like assasinations, bomb attacks, raids on police stations and so on. IRA declared war against Great Britain in 1919. The Irish War of Independence was fought with guerrilla tactics, avoiding large confrontations.

The war ended in 1921, when the Irish Free State was born by the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Irland was split in two, when parts of Ireland remained under british control. IRA and Sinn Fein were torn in the treaty-issue. Micheal Collins and his supporters, thought that an independent state in parts of Ireland was a good starting point, in the struggle for a republic with Northern Ireland. The opposition however, felt that the treaty was insufficient, because it demanded that the Free State should be a part of the British Commenwealth. They felt it would be extremely difficult getting Northern Ireland to join the republic with this treaty.

This conflict resulted in a Civil War from 1922-1923. Those who supported the treaty won the war, and IRA once again became a guerrilla movement. After the end of the Civil War, an attempt to disarm IRA was made, but it didn`t succeed 100 percent. IRA used their agression against the british. IRA had by this time one group in Northern Ireland and one in the Free State. The Free State and later the Republic of Irelands policy towards IRA was passive. IRA got the oppurtunity to accomplish attacks in Northern Ireland, as well as getting safely back across the border. In the 1930s IRA started attacking english territory, in this case just England. They hoped to get the English people to demand that Great Britain should give up their control over Northern Ireland.

This new campaign from IRA didn`t have much effect, it continued into the 1940s, but was ended when it became clear that it only made English people dispise IRA. The weren`t able to force the english to give in. IRA wasn`t as significant after World War II, but in the end of the 1960s, the situation in Northern Ireland was again getting out of hand. The Civil Rights movement in Northern Ireland fought for equal rights for catolics and protestants. The conflict in Northern Ireland isn`t really a religious conflict, but religion made the conflict more difficult to solve. Catolics had a much higher rate of uninployment, and the protestant had many more representatives when it came to elections. The Civil Rights movement hoped to change this, to give everbody equal opportunities. Their protest marches were often met by severe violence by protestant groups. In 1969 the situation had worsened, and there were often uprising. In the end the British Army had to intervene. The catolics were very happy that the army came, and restored the balance in the society, were the policy had taken one side in the conflict. IRA started to work more politically, instead of armed resistance against the british. IRA had almost been disarmed, and their supporters were fewer. IRA was now torn apart and the Provisional IRA was born. They became the protectors of the republics, and they made so called no-go areas, where the police and the british army weren`t allowed entry.

9622951[/snapback]
