‘Dexter’ grapples with a killer dilemma

Dexter Morgan can’t take a life, and it’s killing him.

The serial killer at the center of Showtime’s Dexter finds himself blocked from pursuing his bloody vocation when the second season opens Sunday (9 ET/PT).

The immediate cause is obvious: It has been little more than a month since Dexter killed his brother, the Ice Truck Killer, to prevent him from murdering Dexter’s foster sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter).

However, that connection isn’t apparent to the emotionally stunted Dexter, says Michael C. Hall, a Golden Globe nominee for his portrayal of a police blood-spatter analyst who moonlights by murdering evildoers.

In a scene where “he can’t stab the guy in the head, he’s like, ‘What’s going on? I don’t get it.’ Not, ‘Well, I just killed my brother. I have this gaping wound,’ ” Hall says. “He remains a little developmentally disabled in terms of his ability to connect the dots.”

Fratricide and the accompanying knowledge — recovered memories of his brother and the murder of their mother — aren’t the only things messing up Dexter’s murder mojo. He’s stalked by three men, two living and one dead.

The first, Sgt. Doakes (Erik King), is a suspicious cop following Dexter’s every move. The second is FBI agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine), a serial-killer expert who comes to Miami after divers discover the undersea remains of some of Dexter’s victims. Last, and perhaps most haunting, is the memory of his late foster father, Harry (James Remar), who crafted a youthful Dexter’s murderous tendencies into a tool of vigilante justice.

“Over the course of the second season, a lot more blanks are filled in with some troubling discoveries, primarily in terms of his relationship to his father and the code,” the rules that dictate who Dexter can murder, Hall says. “Dexter is starting to discover the extent to which he was misled by him, told half-truths and out-and-out lies.”

Dexter isn’t the only one making discoveries. The first season of the pay-cable channel’s most-watched series (the finale in December drew more than 1 million viewers) was based on Darkly Dreaming Dexter, one of Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter novels. The producers are constructing the second on their own. “What we have from the books are DNA of a character in a situation with all the characters that surround him. If you have that, a strong plot comes,” executive producer Sara Colleton says.

The writers plan to take the character on a psychological journey. Dexter will get to consider questions about “Harry’s code,” good, evil and the meaning of his life through a 12-step program he attends at the request of girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz), who guesses he has an addiction, just the wrong one.

“He begins to open up and examine with his sponsor things in his life that he never really would question,” executive producer John Goldwyn says.

The coded language of therapy lets Dexter talk about his addiction without getting into specifics, leading to some dark humor. Although his actions are horrific, his internal struggle connects him to others in the group and may be part of his appeal to viewers, Colleton says.

“Even though Dexter’s past is so extreme that none of us would go there, we all have that voice inside us that says ‘eat that cookie’ or ‘drink that martini’ or ‘buy that expensive dress you can’t afford,’ ” she says. “It’s the unchecked id we all wish we could give into.”

Episode four involves some seriously awesome strategery from both Dexter and Laguerta. They aren't working together, but boy, I'd love to see what they could do if they ever joined forces. Also, Rita's mom is a mean ol' meddler. We may love her.
