Hard drive totally broken?

Hi all.

 

Well after coming home last night in a drunken state I think I managed to ruin my hard drive. The door on my case fell down and because I have a fan on the door it pulled out the power cable to my hard drive. Of course, not thinking I just pushed the power cable back in. At the time I didnt beleive I could do damage as I know the power cable on computers can only be pushed in the correct way but I managed to force it enough to get the whole system to stop instantly and that tail tail electrical smell.

 

Yes I know I should of turned the computer off and yes I know I should of put the light on and yes I know I shouldnt be messing with my computer when Im drunk, but whats done is done.

 

So any chance that it will ever work again or should I log onto Komplett and get one ordered?

Hi,

 

It looks to me like your harddrive is completely broken, most likely a destroyed circuit. But be carefull, other components may be broken as well.

 

I'd probably order a new harddrive, and install it, then check all my other components for any damage.

 

I would also try to access the harddrive once more, to get some data out of it.

Thanks for the response. Yes I think the hard drive is broken. I have tried changing all of the cables with my other sata drive and they are all fine. Even placed the secondary drive cable in another sata slot and no luck. However the drive is still spinning.

 

So any chance of me recovering any data with software or am I just going to have to explain to my fiancee that all of our family pictures are lost forever? Amazing how quickly you think about backing up your data when something like this happens.

You’re not necessarily out of luck, but you may have to contact professionals in order to scan your hard drive. If the circuit-board on the hard drive has been fried your best bet is to get a professional to replace it and hopefully retrieve your data. It’s going to cost you, but the again, valuable back-up lessons rarely come cheap….

Any idea who to contact in Norway? What sort of cost is involved? And you are right about the valuable backup lesson...

The first name that pops into my mind is "IBAS". They are somewhat expensive, but get the job done. I read recently about another company that also does recovery work and for a cheaper price, but I can't remember their name.

 

Anyone?

"IBAS" is .. very expencive.

 

I could talk to a friend of mine who's running a company called "ReConsult", they charge you with nothing if they dont suceed with the mission. And they are far more cheap than "IBAS".

 

I do my own recovery with licenced programs.

 

EX: WinPE and GetBackDataNTFS

 

But, if you dont know what you are doing, leave it to professionals.

Problem is with this recovery software is that the hard drive isnt showing up at all. Not at start up or in windows. Like it isnt connected.

Ok little update. Just looked at the hard drive and with removing a few screws the whole of the circuit board comes off in one. So if I order an identical drive, do you think that I could just change the boards and it will work or do you think the damage would be in the main housing?

My best guess is to try around different shops and ask kindly about if they could check for if they have any hard drives manufactured by the aprox date of your drive, otherwise Id suggest making a post here in the forums, perhaps someone here has a corrupt drive with an intact circuit board which could be your lifesaver.

I work as a techie, and I have exchanged several cirquit boards on harddrives. As long as it is only the cirquit board it self that is defective, you will most likely be successful in trying to recovery your data.

 

Are there any visible burns on the board?

Hi there, no there doesnt seem to be any visable burns at all which I thought was strange. When connected the drive is completely dead. No spinning at all but I can only think it must be the circuit board as I cant see the current getting any further into the drive to do more serious damage? Or am I wrong?

If you are unlucky, you blew out the motor as well.

 

However: there is a small connector on the circuit board that is connected to the motor by just leting the connectors touch. There are three small square connectors that should align with the connector on the motor. If you have a volt meter, you can measure the connections after connecting it to the PSU.

Ah ok, well I dont have a volt meter so Ill just buy another one and hope for the best. Thanks once again for all the help.
