Engelskoppgave - trenger rettehjelp.

Anbefalte innlegg

The three generations mentioned in the poem are the main person, his father and his grandfather. It’s likely that the main character indeed is the writer of the poem, Seamus Heaney. The reason to my conclusion is simply based on the fact that the main person in the poem uses a pen. Just as Seamus Heaney. And it’s also based on the fact that Seamus Heaney was born on a farm in Castledawson, Nothern Ireland. His father and grandfather however, use the spade to work with. They’re farmers and are digging for potatoes. Hence the title of the poem; “Digging”. As we all know, potatoes are very important for Ireland.

The poem enlighten us that his father and grandfather were skilled farmers. “By god, the old man could handle a spade, just like his old man.” And “My Grandfather could cut more turf in a day than any other man on Toner’s bog” help us understand how good they were in their profession. The main character is more skilled with his pen. He even compares his pen with a gun; “Between my finger and my thumb, The squat pen rests; as snug as a gun”. This might symbolize the industrial revolution. Since the industrial revolution kicked in you didn’t had to be a strong farmer, simply because a pen became as powerful as a gun.

Seamus Heaney uses a lot of alliteration, assonance, simile and metaphor in his poem. Let me explain the meaning of the words.

Alliteration: Is a system of initial rhyme or repetition of the same sounds or similar consonants. Example from the poem: “Nicking and slicing neatly”.

Assonance: Is the repetition of the same or similar sounds and diphthongs. Example from the poem: “The cold smell of potato mold, the squelch and slap”.

Simile: Is comparing something with the use of “as” or “like”. Example from the poem: “The squat pen rests; as snug as a gun”.

Metaphor: Is to compare something without using words like “as” or “like”. Example from the poem: “Through living roots awaken in my head”.

In has been said that “Heaney replaced the spade with the pen”. I believe this prove my point – that the poem – is inspired by Mr. Heaney’s life. It seems like the poem is a self portrayal of his life - in contrast to his father and grand father - he chose to work with the pen instead of the spade. Even though he didn’t follow their footsteps he still seems to respect them and their kind of work.

Jeg er klar over at den ikke er direkte lang, men dette er bare en del av oppgaven. :)

Tusen takk for all hjelp!

The three generations mentioned in the poem are the main person, his father and his grandfather.

The three generations portrayed in the poem are represented by the protagonist, his father and his grandfather.

It is likely that the protagonist is the poet himself, Seamus Heaney. One can arrive at this conclusion based on a few facts: first, Seamus Heaney was born on a farm in Castledawson in Northern Ireland, yet like the poet he uses a pen. Secondly, the father and grandfather of the protagonist do manual labour with spades, digging for potatoes; hence the title of the poem: "Digging". Historically, potatoes have an important role in Irish agriculture.

(dette i kursiv er feil)

The poem vividly describes the hard work and talent of his forebears: "By God, the old man could handle a spade, just like his old man" and "My Grandfather could cut more turf in a day than any other man on Toner's bog". These lines emphasise the skill with which they laboured. The abilities of the protagonist lie elsewhere: "Between my finger and my thumb, the squat pen rests; as snug as a gun". He likens the power of the pen to that of a gun when in his capable hands; the dedication and talent of the father and grandfather has transmuted into something else, but of equal or even greater potential for power.

It has been said that "Heaney replaced the spade with the pen". I believe this quote supports my interpretation: that the poem is inspired by Mr. Heaney's life. I find the poem to be strongly autobiographical: differing from his father and grandfather - and by extension his prescribed fate and place in Ireland - he chose to work with the pen instead of the spade. The poem never shows anything but respect for the manual labour of the father and grandfather; on the contrary, it exalts their skill with the spade and the dedication of their work.
