":: Tired of getting constantly fucked over by micosoft? Then pull your head out of your ass."

Totally agree with that. I have had such a great time post XP, it is hard to explain. Sorry MS, your OS is great, no doubt about that, but be aware there is a serious threat lurking in the background, threatening the reign of you OS-empire. And it has just begun. Go Linux.

8994442

Ever since I dropped windows, about a year go, things have become a breeze. It's all the little things, you know what I mean... For instance: I was just reading another thread on the forum, when some dude had opened a small zip file he got on MSN, as soon as he opened the content, his entire system was crippled, and now the entire OS has to be reinstalled. Needless to say, we're talking about windows.

I just love being able to surf the web, often somewhat "shady" sites, without having to worry a single second about antivirus, spyware and other trash like that.

Everything is free, and there's pretty much a free open-source alternative to all major commercial programs out there.

Not to mention that linux is starting to become big on phones, and will only grow over the next years. Have any of you ever heard of openmoko? (http://openmoko.org).

The phone Neo1973 is running on this, I'm definitely buying it one of these days. Unlike the iPhone, it's not locked to any dumbass carrier (AT&T), and you can do what the fuck ever you want with it! And imagine a phone that is COMPLETELY OPEN! Can you even begin to think about all the cool stuff the community is gonna develop for it? Damn straight.

OpenMoko

http://www.openmoko.com/press/index.html

https://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/IPhone

Also, it has a beautiful resolution - 480x640. The iPhone runs on 320x480.

Edit.

Of course, it has flaws, and a lot of stuff will become better in time. It's the first phone to run openmoko, but I think it's important to support it anyhow (rather: especially).

Unfortunately linux on mobile phones will never be COMPLETELY OPEN as far as I've been told. This is due to certain aspects of the OS being dangarous to allow anybody access to. Among other things you can really fuck up your operators network if you play around with certain core GSM functions on the phone. So we will never see a completely open OS on our phone.

But linux on a phone =

When you put it like that, you are of course right. Me capitalizing "completely open" may have been a bit out there. :)

But to bottom line it, the development possibilities will be far greater than those of any closed-source platform, such as the one the iPhone runs on.

Just came across this: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/iphone-ri...ideo-274102.php

What the fuck were apple thinking when putting together those ringtones?

Couldn't agree more with you on that point :) :) :) Really looking forward to purchasing my first *nix phone.

We went to Fretex today. Much nice stuff there. I bought two brand new t-shirts for 50 NOK (XXL <3). Then me and my father bought two nice paintings for like 300 NOK, one wooden elephant and one book.

Sounds nice, although I wouldn't know what to do with a wooden elephant. :p

Guess it depends upon in what sense you are using it...

If it's a title a nice translation would be "Cat races of the world"

8997297

And if it's built into a sentence, or commenting some figure, you could make it "the majority of the worlds cat races...".

Edit.

(As you suggested yourself).

Or you might say that if your friend had any brains he wouldn't have opened this file at all. My computer(s) have never, ever been infected by any virus at all. Of course, I've had to remove some spyware now and then, but hey that's only maintenance anyhow. It's much like how you have to change oil on your car. I run a process each night to rid my computer of that kind of trash. Guess what, I run Windows on my computer. Sometimes there are some crap to find, mostly it's clean. I'm a nerd, and proud of it, but I still run Windows.

When people come to me to complain about their computer being infected by a virus or that it just runs slowly. Do you know who these users usually are? They are the average Joe! The one who will run that *.exe he just got instead of that porn movie he thought he was downloading. Or the one who will download and run everything on a site called: "onlyfreeporn4youmyfriend.ro/omgustupidfuck or "hackeveryone4freetoday.ru".

If you use your brains, you will never, and I repeat never get your credit card skimmed or get your computer infected by any virus.

Let's think about the enormous facebook plague that is currently racing across the world. My guess is that more then 80/90% of those users, have no brains. Those are users that would open an EXE, or click a banner that says "you're user one million - click to collect your price!", without giving it a second thought. At least I know a lot of those people myself - average joe's.

With Linux is the driver seat, people could still click those banners, without having to worry about being fucked over.

Yeah, you just gotta have some "nettvett". If Linux had been as popular you would have to run anti-virus software as well.

8999418

I agree, If linux had been as big as windows is right now, more vulnerabilities would probably exist, however, Linux is built on a base that is far more secure then anything windows uses. Meaning that the risk would still be a lot smaller. (I'm not gonna bother to start a big discussion on that matter, though).

Another thing that is great about Linux and security, is that whenever a flaw or security hole is exposed, the developers and the community, will instantly cover it up! I'm talking about a few hours, sometimes a lot less. Why can't microsoft do that? Here's why.

Whenever microsoft has to cover up one of their many flaws in one of their crappy OS'es (got personal there), they can't go out and release a patch or fix through windows update before they are absolutely one hudnred percent sure that it does in fact work on all system. They can't risk releasing a patch, or workaround, that conflicts with a previous patch, a service pack or whatever the issue at hand is. They therefore have to spend "years" testing their security update in a shitload of scenarios, to make sure it works properly. A commercial company fucking up on that front, is bad.

The linux community has thousands, tens of thousands of developers, contributers, community people and so forth, that help fix problems as soon as they appear.

Now... WIth all this said, I think windows is a good OS! It has a lot of nice features, no doubt. However, I strongly feel and believe that there is a better alternative out there, namely Linux!

Linux is not yet for everybody, and that's okay.

I'm not one of those fanatics that goes out and says: "You suck ass, because you don't use windows". If you want to you windows, thats fine with me, because it's your choice. And yours alone.

Is it just me or do you consequently write Linux with a capital L but Windows and Microsoft uncapitalized?

So, this average Joe that keeps clicking banners and links, do you think he would be able to update his kernel when the old one has a huge security hole in it? I thought not:)

An by the way, I use Windows so I wouldn't suck anyhow, but you on the other hand as a Linux user would suck if you told me that I sucked if I didn't use Windows. It's probably just a typo, but hey it was a fun one. Points to "skjul".

Yawn. I've used *nix since 1999, but I also use windows everyday. What OS I use depends upon what I'm doing at the moment. But this debate has been going on since I first tried a *nix system in 99, and it probably won't go away either.

Ufortunately people who use windows in a "stupid" way, would never be satesfied with *nix because they couldn't do the "stupid" things their used to. If you're stupid enough that you get infected by all sorts of crap all the time, your too stupid to use *nix.

Take Stian89s friend who got infected. He probebly called Stian89 for help. But if Stian89 had convinced him to install *nix, he would probably call Stian89 every single day asking him; "Why can't I...?", "How do I...?", etc.)

Think of the dilema a sysadm has. He can go for windows and have to fix the machines all the time due to poor user knowlige, og he can go for *nix and have to help the user and answer their "Why can't I run hotchicksdirectlyonyourdesktop.exe I just downloaded" questions.

It's probably easier, cheaper and less manpower hungry to run a windows system for stupid users, than a *nix system. All you need is a good ghosting system to keep the computers running smoothly. Then any "mistreated" computer can easily be recovered at any time.

Answering all of your stupid users questions, "Why can't I", "How can I", "Where do I", etc. on a *nix system takes a lot of time.

Oh. And Stian89's typo made my day :)

I almost couldn't have said it better myself. It's just that as a system administrator I can restrict stupid users from doing stupid things. :w00t:

No, the OS isn't really that great, because it's been static the last six years. It has it's uses, no doubt about it, but for serious and constructive use I find it useless. I have no workflow in Windows.

For me, Windows XP has only one use left, and that is my games. Other than that, I run OS X.

Jupp, as long as limiting what users can do with the system doesn't conflict with the users daily work. An example would be a journalist writing software reviews. Limit his access to install crap from the net, and you've given yourself a huge job. Let him install what ever crap he wants, and restore his system every night works fine. Of course if you can limit the posibilities of being stupid without hindering anybodys work, that would be the best.

I think I was a bit tired when I wrote that. Labor efficient isn't really the word I was looking for. I probably should have said somthing like:

It's probably easier, cheaper and requires less effort to run a windows system for stupid users [....]

I wanted to imply not only that it demanded less man-hours, but also the fact that the sysadm has more time to perform more important tasks rather than answer stupid user questions.

Remember that even though Microsoft and Mac call XP and OS X operating systems, they actually consist of three parts; the operating system, a user-interface and a set of user applications. (*nix has followed the definition of an operating system much better, hence we call it a distro) Anyhow, what most people actually are discussing when they say how great or poor XP is as an operating system is the user-interface, not the operating system.

All windows versions are based on a really crapy operating system. IOW windows operating systems suck bigtime, windows user-interfaces work for some people and don't work for others.
