Why are you going to London alone Yvonne? Do you have any special plans?

And just like that was Christmas eve over. And for once it was actually white snow on Christmas here on the west coast.

I have a question for you guys, as I mentioned earlier me and friend of mine is traveling to Australia. Were going to stay there for about 1 year to work and travel. And my plan was to take a course in English both oral and writing.

But my travel partner thinks that since were going to stay there for 1 year, that our English will get better and better and at the end we will be pretty good in talking English. And this is without taking any course whatsoever.

My opinion is that if I take a English course I will get a bigger understanding and writing the English language, I fell that there is no good in just talking English and making bad habits. With the course I can communicate better with the Aussies and be very fluent when it comes to talking..

What do you guys think?

I have no plans of sleeping tonight, and apparently my body won't allow me to either. So I borrowed my dad's new headphones, thinking they might be excellent for music. Not impressed though. There's too much bass, which distorts the sound quite a bit.

Err, why did I write in this thread anyway?

Because my boyfriend can't and all my friends have plans on their own. I don't mind really, it's not as bad as it might sound, I've been there before on my own, and I loved it. My plan is to go shopping, now that the sale in January is due. ;)

Either way, over to your question. I agree with you both actually. A writing course might enable you to become a better writer in English, and I would recommend that, seeing that there are new things to learn all the time. At the same time you get to learn the language properly at first hand by being in Australia.

I myself is a student of English, I study English, not due to the fact that I got big problems or feel I need to learn the basic skills of English. It has something to do with my love for English. And I tell you - you'll learn so many new things, even if your English is quite exquisite. My English teacher at Høgskolen i Oslo (when I studied to become a teacher) thought I came from England, Sussex to be exact, and she told me that (she was American herself) you'll never stop learning when it comes to the English language.

Even if I'm quite good when it comes to the English language, I learn new stuff everyday. Being an advanced learner doesn't make you perfect, and you should also know that native speakers themselves make lots of mistakes all the time. Being able to see that can be both fun and interesting. And that was really my point - I think you should take the course. Not because you need to learn the language from scratch, take a more advanced class, and you'll learn new things from a different perspective than you did before. You see, Australian English is a bit different than f.ex British English and American English, and learning to separate the differences, also make you think through the usage of your English when you speak or write. It will help you become more consistent, and furthermore you might also be given the tools to learn new words and ways of expression.

Make "The Englsih Pub" to "Ye Olde Pub" and you got my vote.

I haven't used my vote yet, but if there was a "Ye Olde Pub" option I'd vote for it :)

I believe that the best way to learn a language is to use it in everyday life. Which is why I'm hopefully participating in a cultural exchange program in the US 2010/11.
