00:01:30,183 --> 00:01:37,403
PART 3 - LAWRENCE
Brussels
Last decade of the 19th century

2
00:01:50,130 --> 00:01:54,457
See, this is Brussels.

3
00:01:57,401 --> 00:01:59,834
Oh, a horseless carriage.

4
00:01:59,954 --> 00:02:02,406
It is an automobile.

5
00:02:02,526 --> 00:02:05,290
It is a 'De Dion Bouton'.

6
00:02:27,630 --> 00:02:30,262
There. We have arrived.

7
00:02:33,725 --> 00:02:37,383
Hurry, girls. Fetch the ladies luggage. Quickly.

8
00:03:15,854 --> 00:03:17,302
Miss.

9
00:03:19,828 --> 00:03:23,447
My god. The child looks terrible. We
have to work on that right away.

10
00:03:23,486 --> 00:03:25,052
Control yourself, will you?

11
00:03:25,072 --> 00:03:28,003
I have been controlling myself
for the last 24 years!

12
00:03:28,023 --> 00:03:30,116
We have our responsibilities.

13
00:03:30,146 --> 00:03:32,439
Towards those in The Hague?
- You do not know them.

14
00:03:33,488 --> 00:03:37,067
I do know them. They
just make me thirsty.

15
00:03:51,262 --> 00:03:53,585
We are down here!

16
00:04:07,651 --> 00:04:11,330
To your health! Daniel and I were
just talking about you.

17
00:04:11,350 --> 00:04:14,700
First lesson in Brussels... don't listen
too closely to what Elise says.

18
00:04:14,720 --> 00:04:17,960
Exactly. And do not think
that anything Daniel says...

19
00:04:18,080 --> 00:04:20,329
...holds any importance and
can't be disregarded.

20
00:04:20,449 --> 00:04:23,250
In other words... you are as
free as a bird.

21
00:04:23,370 --> 00:04:26,719
Anyway... a toast to your
regained freedom.

22
00:04:26,729 --> 00:04:30,462
We do not behave this
mischievously, all the time.

23
00:04:30,657 --> 00:04:32,186
But we do think of it, all the time.

24
00:04:32,465 --> 00:04:36,015
In this house we only know about
freedom and cheerfulness.

25
00:04:36,135 --> 00:04:37,849
Exactly what you need.

26
00:04:37,969 --> 00:04:39,696
Me?
- Yes, certainly.

27
00:04:39,816 --> 00:04:42,079
You are beautiful, rich
and independent.

28
00:04:42,199 --> 00:04:43,933
You are born to be free
and cheerful.

29
00:04:44,342 --> 00:04:47,193
Last year in The Hague,
I already said...

30
00:04:47,716 --> 00:04:51,435
Daniel does not want me to talk about it.
But I cannot keep quiet...

31
00:04:51,445 --> 00:04:53,459
You should try it.

32
00:04:53,479 --> 00:04:56,121
I thought... why aren't you
enjoying yourself?

33
00:04:56,614 --> 00:04:59,714
When I was your age... I was ugly
and I had no penny.

34
00:04:59,744 --> 00:05:03,832
But I was enjoying myself.
And now.. look at me...

35
00:05:04,960 --> 00:05:07,542
She can go on like this for hours!

36
00:05:07,591 --> 00:05:09,830
And you keep adding to it.

37
00:05:09,865 --> 00:05:12,093
Eline can explore everything on her own.

38
00:05:12,126 --> 00:05:14,331
And there is a lot to explore.

39
00:05:14,357 --> 00:05:17,154
Next week, my dear,
I will throw a party...

40
00:05:17,180 --> 00:05:20,239
...for the most beautiful young
lady from The Hague.

41
00:05:20,359 --> 00:05:22,750
And all of Brussels will
come to admire you.

42
00:05:31,648 --> 00:05:32,328
Yes?

43
00:05:33,062 --> 00:05:34,021
But of course.

44
00:05:34,648 --> 00:05:37,341
Panama. The canal, not the hat.

45
00:05:38,474 --> 00:05:39,947
Buying.

46
00:05:41,673 --> 00:05:43,425
It's not going well.

47
00:05:45,464 --> 00:05:46,736
Of course, buy.

48
00:05:48,463 --> 00:05:51,339
You're not leaving, are you?
- I'll be back soon.

49
00:05:51,383 --> 00:05:53,553
Working.. always working.

50
00:05:53,597 --> 00:05:55,601
He keeps making money.
Don't you, my dear?

51
00:05:55,645 --> 00:05:58,434
Exhausting, that woman.
Do not let her trick you.

52
00:06:01,521 --> 00:06:02,497
Sir.

53
00:06:09,487 --> 00:06:11,805
What silly girls we are.
-You're not.

54
00:06:11,925 --> 00:06:14,001
But that, for example...

55
00:06:16,147 --> 00:06:18,248
... we have to fix that too.

56
00:06:19,886 --> 00:06:22,265
We do have our own miracle doctor.

57
00:06:22,292 --> 00:06:24,854
He'll just have a look at you,
and you'll feel better.

58
00:06:25,708 --> 00:06:27,555
Don't worry, my dear.

59
00:06:27,582 --> 00:06:30,083
Do not feel entrapped...

60
00:06:30,650 --> 00:06:32,436
Just say it, and we will be gone.

61
00:06:32,839 --> 00:06:34,320
Do you get it?

62
00:06:34,364 --> 00:06:36,342
The beauty of being young ...

63
00:06:36,377 --> 00:06:38,652
is the ability to change life every day.

64
00:06:39,184 --> 00:06:39,873
Do you understand?

65
00:06:39,993 --> 00:06:42,313
It is just because she
is jealous of you.

66
00:06:42,644 --> 00:06:44,230
You have no knowledge of it.

67
00:06:45,627 --> 00:06:48,407
My dear Elise!
It is a mircacle.

68
00:06:48,450 --> 00:06:50,306
This is my brother.

69
00:06:50,332 --> 00:06:53,095
I introduce you to the Prince Igor Igoronovitch.

70
00:06:53,215 --> 00:06:55,012
My treasure.

71
00:06:56,853 --> 00:06:59,067
He is not a Russian, of course, but he is cute.

72
00:06:59,110 --> 00:07:01,115
You'll see him at the ball, next week.

73
00:07:03,241 --> 00:07:04,872
Elise!

74
00:07:06,066 --> 00:07:08,384
May I introduce my niece
from The Hague?

75
00:07:08,410 --> 00:07:11,147
Isn't she enchanting?
- Ravishing.

76
00:07:13,605 --> 00:07:16,934
They say she has 5 younger lovers.

77
00:07:16,953 --> 00:07:18,853
She is a very charming lady.

78
00:07:20,117 --> 00:07:21,494
Oh.. it's raining.

79
00:07:22,365 --> 00:07:24,265
And no umbrella.

80
00:07:31,490 --> 00:07:33,259
What a downpour.

81
00:07:33,305 --> 00:07:35,955
Let's get a drink.

82
00:07:35,989 --> 00:07:37,767
Oh.. there is uncle Daniel.

83
00:07:38,952 --> 00:07:40,390
Oh, and there is the doctor.

84
00:07:40,416 --> 00:07:42,212
Didn't I tell you he is wonderful?

85
00:07:42,238 --> 00:07:44,443
He is around when you need him.

86
00:07:46,440 --> 00:07:49,142
And.. what do you think
of my niece, Doctor?

87
00:07:49,656 --> 00:07:53,556
Eline, let him have a look at you.

88
00:07:53,862 --> 00:07:56,333
What can I order for you?
- A cup of tea would be nice.

89
00:07:56,368 --> 00:07:58,999
And we will have some sherry.
- Waiter!

90
00:07:59,751 --> 00:08:01,851
Two sherry and a cup of tea.
- Look! Uncle Daniel.

91
00:08:02,191 --> 00:08:04,274
Ah, yes..that's him.

92
00:08:04,509 --> 00:08:05,877
Should we leave?

93
00:08:05,997 --> 00:08:08,317
This is what he means by working.

94
00:08:08,437 --> 00:08:10,514
He is here with friends.

95
00:08:10,634 --> 00:08:14,333
They're discussing if they can
exchange their Russian stocks...

96
00:08:14,682 --> 00:08:17,130
...for shares in the Panama Canal.

97
00:08:20,208 --> 00:08:22,657
My niece has had severe bronchitis.

98
00:08:22,692 --> 00:08:24,792
He will examine you in a moment.

99
00:08:25,071 --> 00:08:25,951
So?

100
00:08:27,407 --> 00:08:29,001
Migraine?
- Yes

101
00:08:29,657 --> 00:08:31,295
Insomnia?
- Yes.

102
00:08:31,591 --> 00:08:33,789
And what did your doctor
prescribe for that?

103
00:08:33,909 --> 00:08:35,251
Applying compresses.

104
00:08:36,890 --> 00:08:40,873
Dutch doctors and their hydrotherapies.

105
00:08:41,423 --> 00:08:43,357
And what do you recommend?

106
00:08:44,055 --> 00:08:48,028
First of all, your niece needs to rest.

107
00:08:49,242 --> 00:08:51,447
He can make you sleep
by will power alone.

108
00:08:51,987 --> 00:08:53,756
By hypnosis, of course.

109
00:08:54,088 --> 00:08:56,258
Oh no, I want to stay myself.

110
00:08:57,164 --> 00:08:59,439
Did you have something else in mind?

111
00:09:00,417 --> 00:09:02,535
My physician, Doctor Reijer says...

112
00:09:02,569 --> 00:09:05,742
...that nature provides everything
that is needed for healing.

113
00:09:05,768 --> 00:09:07,528
Ah, nature!

114
00:09:07,999 --> 00:09:10,779
But nature is exactly what we try
to control, Miss Vere.

115
00:09:11,503 --> 00:09:13,980
I can provide you with drops...

116
00:09:14,258 --> 00:09:16,524
...but these are quite expensive.

117
00:09:16,559 --> 00:09:18,520
Oh, but that is of no importance.
Eline is rich.

118
00:09:18,564 --> 00:09:21,274
She can buy your whole supply of morphine.

119
00:09:21,300 --> 00:09:23,949
Then I will provide them.

120
00:09:25,955 --> 00:09:28,334
Montesquiou, Marcel, we are here!

121
00:09:30,706 --> 00:09:34,384
To be admired it suffices to have beautiful eyes.

122
00:09:34,767 --> 00:09:37,469
Yours want to shine, and to know...

123
00:09:38,389 --> 00:09:41,000
...that all this delirium contains a being...

124
00:10:48,797 --> 00:10:49,834
Good evening.

125
00:10:52,736 --> 00:10:57,049
There is your aunt.
- Enjoy yourself. Enjoy!

126
00:11:00,946 --> 00:11:03,823
Madame Vanduvere...
I heard you sing too.

127
00:11:03,841 --> 00:11:06,106
Not convincingly.
- Aren't you an artist?

128
00:11:06,123 --> 00:11:07,124
Not at all, Madam.

129
00:11:07,127 --> 00:11:11,195
There are so many artists around tonight.

130
00:11:11,219 --> 00:11:14,197
The painters, the musicians, the poets.

131
00:11:14,241 --> 00:11:17,325
Look over there! Look!

132
00:11:17,334 --> 00:11:21,134
I know them all! All, without exception.

133
00:11:21,151 --> 00:11:23,643
I am their protectress.

134
00:11:23,679 --> 00:11:28,028
They are all geniusses. And one day,
I am sure of it...

135
00:11:28,307 --> 00:11:31,766
...one day, they will be idolized

136
00:11:31,812 --> 00:11:35,372
and the whole world will lie at their feet.

137
00:11:36,250 --> 00:11:39,000
Ladies and gentlemen,
the inglenook dance.

138
00:11:46,560 --> 00:11:49,802
May I present my young protégé?

139
00:11:50,000 --> 00:11:52,580
You'll see, he's one of the...

140
00:11:58,300 --> 00:11:59,773
Do you write, young man?

141
00:12:07,740 --> 00:12:09,701
Changé!

142
00:12:23,211 --> 00:12:24,710
Changé!

143
00:12:28,615 --> 00:12:29,487
You!

144
00:12:31,197 --> 00:12:33,071
Eline. Eline!

145
00:12:35,920 --> 00:12:37,480
Surprise!

146
00:12:37,600 --> 00:12:39,982
And I thought it already...
- What?

147
00:12:40,025 --> 00:12:43,547
That I saw your American friend.
- We just arrived from New York.

148
00:12:43,667 --> 00:12:46,144
And you, Eline.. changed so much.
- Yes?

149
00:12:46,264 --> 00:12:48,455
Skinnier, more beautiful.

150
00:12:48,481 --> 00:12:51,279
And there is something in your eyes.
As if you can conquer the world.

151
00:12:51,399 --> 00:12:54,032
Torn away from The Hague?
- Totally.

152
00:13:12,986 --> 00:13:14,545
Do you think he is handsome?

153
00:13:14,546 --> 00:13:15,835
I think so, yes.

154
00:13:15,870 --> 00:13:17,552
Masculine?
- Very masculine.

155
00:13:18,066 --> 00:13:18,859
Noble?

156
00:13:19,346 --> 00:13:22,300
How am I to know that. He does
not look American though.

157
00:13:22,420 --> 00:13:24,427
Was he to arrive on a horse, or something?

158
00:13:24,846 --> 00:13:26,859
Changé!

159
00:13:29,336 --> 00:13:32,159
Dancing with Vincent will not
help you find a lover.

160
00:13:32,185 --> 00:13:35,628
Should I?
- Freedom, cheerfulness.

161
00:13:37,807 --> 00:13:39,141
Oh no. Not that one.

162
00:13:55,989 --> 00:13:58,324
Do you enjoy yourself?
- Totally!

163
00:14:10,000 --> 00:14:14,750
Ah, you're not allowed to refuse,
your poetry is so divine

164
00:14:28,458 --> 00:14:30,157
Silence, my friends.

165
00:14:30,401 --> 00:14:35,719
The Count of Montesquiou has
agreed to recite his work.

166
00:14:36,442 --> 00:14:39,048
Suave...
-Suave.

167
00:14:44,000 --> 00:14:50,000
To be admired it suffices
to have beautiful eyes

168
00:14:51,271 --> 00:14:54,271
Yours wanted to radiate, and to know...

169
00:15:35,662 --> 00:15:39,958
My friends... a duet!

170
00:16:29,912 --> 00:16:32,701
Are you two behaving yourselves?
- Like role models.

171
00:18:24,429 --> 00:18:26,529
Say.. where is Lawrence?

172
00:18:27,322 --> 00:18:29,274
And what did you think of him?

173
00:18:29,310 --> 00:18:30,784
Very pretty.

174
00:18:30,904 --> 00:18:32,291
Very masculine.

175
00:18:32,411 --> 00:18:33,877
And very noble.

176
00:19:39,800 --> 00:19:42,266
Good morning. Will you come with me?

177
00:19:42,580 --> 00:19:45,116
Right now?
- I arranged a meeting with a pianist.

178
00:19:45,236 --> 00:19:48,175
He plays the piano very well.

179
00:19:48,211 --> 00:19:51,244
I have an arrangement already.
With Vincent and Lawrence.

180
00:19:51,364 --> 00:19:54,306
C'mon. The whole of Brussels
admires you, and you...

181
00:19:54,426 --> 00:19:56,752
...you go out with your
cousin and his friend.

182
00:19:56,872 --> 00:19:59,515
We're going to the temple
of the human passions.

183
00:19:59,635 --> 00:20:00,883
Human passions?

184
00:20:01,003 --> 00:20:03,038
But that is obscene.

185
00:20:03,158 --> 00:20:05,269
Daniel would prohibit me to go there.

186
00:20:05,389 --> 00:20:07,447
As if anyone can tell you what to do.

187
00:20:07,567 --> 00:20:10,516
In a manner of speaking, of course.

188
00:20:10,969 --> 00:20:13,435
Human passion...
Vincent and Lawrence...

189
00:20:13,436 --> 00:20:16,059
You should beware of them.

190
00:20:16,179 --> 00:20:17,627
Why? Are they dangerous?

191
00:20:17,890 --> 00:20:20,060
No. Not exactly.

192
00:23:47,782 --> 00:23:51,085
Bravo! What fire, what fervor!

193
00:23:51,205 --> 00:23:53,046
As if you are in love!

194
00:23:53,272 --> 00:23:55,827
And the human passions?

195
00:23:55,947 --> 00:23:57,613
Not one snide remark

196
00:23:58,000 --> 00:23:59,000
In other words, boring

197
00:23:59,126 --> 00:24:01,648
Not at all. Lawrence was very charming.
- Oh, I'm sure of that.

198
00:24:01,874 --> 00:24:03,853
And Vincent?
- Yes, he too. Why?

199
00:24:04,203 --> 00:24:06,800
Just asking. It's not my affair.

200
00:24:07,008 --> 00:24:09,100
See them, if it amuses you...
...from time to time

201
00:24:09,250 --> 00:24:10,400
He came looking for me this morning

202
00:24:10,500 --> 00:24:12,000
Again!
- Oh, yes.

203
00:24:13,000 --> 00:24:16,250
Well, that gives me an idea
- About what?

204
00:24:16,406 --> 00:24:19,250
Ah, that I'm keeping to myself.
But I'm still thinking about it.

205
00:24:19,300 --> 00:24:21,750
And that's important because, as
you know, I hardly ever think.

206
00:24:21,928 --> 00:24:23,400
In any case, there's nothing to think about.

207
00:24:23,583 --> 00:24:25,750
As you like. But don't get upset.

208
00:24:26,029 --> 00:24:27,750
As far as I'm concerned,
everything is permited

209
00:24:28,121 --> 00:24:29,968
Just tell me if I am right.

210
00:24:30,088 --> 00:24:32,870
I am fed up with all this
mystery. Say what you mean.

211
00:24:33,323 --> 00:24:35,075
Oh no, my darling...

212
00:24:35,425 --> 00:24:38,493
Either no explanation is required...

213
00:24:39,008 --> 00:24:43,609
...or you don't know what I'm talking about.
And then you would not understand, in any case.

214
00:24:45,142 --> 00:24:48,070
Are they still planning to leave?
- Of course.

215
00:24:50,964 --> 00:24:53,839
Visitors for Miss Vere.
- Finally!

216
00:24:54,218 --> 00:24:56,640
Tell Mr St. Claire that I will be
with him in a moment.

217
00:24:56,643 --> 00:24:59,492
I'm sorry Miss. But it is not the
American gentleman.

218
00:24:59,612 --> 00:25:01,563
They are your friends from The Hague.

219
00:25:01,598 --> 00:25:02,400
I leave them to you.

220
00:25:06,691 --> 00:25:08,826
Let them in.
- Yes, Madam.

221
00:25:19,155 --> 00:25:23,818
You? Delightful! Why didn't
you take your coat off?

222
00:25:23,844 --> 00:25:25,657
Come in. Please sit down.

223
00:25:26,128 --> 00:25:27,993
Very briefly.
- We are just passing through.

224
00:25:28,026 --> 00:25:30,189
But I said to Georges..
we should ring the door bell...

225
00:25:30,207 --> 00:25:31,549
...just to shake Eline's hand.

226
00:25:31,566 --> 00:25:33,283
Oh, that is so sweet!

227
00:25:33,329 --> 00:25:35,229
Traveling through?
- This afternoon to Paris.

228
00:25:35,349 --> 00:25:37,207
And next month, to America.

229
00:25:37,250 --> 00:25:39,535
And when we arrive in California,
the citrusses will be blooming.

230
00:25:39,655 --> 00:25:41,626
Oh.. so you two really did go through with it!

231
00:25:41,746 --> 00:25:44,606
Married! Away from The Hague!
- Of course.

232
00:25:45,548 --> 00:25:46,742
How are things in The Hague?

233
00:25:46,862 --> 00:25:48,670
As it was a hundred years ago...

234
00:25:48,713 --> 00:25:50,561
And like it will be in another
hundred years.

235
00:25:50,681 --> 00:25:52,792
Everything still the same?
- Yes, for sure.

236
00:25:53,332 --> 00:25:57,236
I cannot blame you for being here.
- Yes. And it is so lovely here.

237
00:25:59,268 --> 00:26:01,176
Sad, isn't it? About Jeanne?

238
00:26:01,743 --> 00:26:03,686
Frans dead already?

239
00:26:04,508 --> 00:26:08,046
How terrible. I must write to her
at once.

240
00:26:11,261 --> 00:26:12,761
Not Frans, Eline.

241
00:26:16,814 --> 00:26:17,720
Jeanne?

242
00:26:17,920 --> 00:26:21,779
On the boat to the Indies an
epidemic broke out. Cholera.

243
00:26:22,023 --> 00:26:25,623
Eline! Your friends have arrived.

244
00:26:27,893 --> 00:26:29,418
Jeanne!

245
00:27:36,694 --> 00:27:39,875
What! They have postponed
their voyage again?

246
00:27:39,995 --> 00:27:41,103
I don't know.

247
00:27:41,223 --> 00:27:42,925
You see them everyday.

248
00:27:43,045 --> 00:27:45,635
This is something between
us women, Daniel.

249
00:27:49,827 --> 00:27:52,145
What do you really think
of Lawrence?

250
00:27:52,163 --> 00:27:53,375
You know that very well.

251
00:27:53,495 --> 00:27:58,150
I am not so sure about that.
Do you wish Lawrence to stay here?

252
00:27:58,270 --> 00:28:02,046
Every day I ask his opinion
about the American railways...

253
00:28:02,082 --> 00:28:05,533
...but it seems impossible to
get some sound advice.

254
00:28:05,653 --> 00:28:07,746
Go to the stock exchange, Daniel.

255
00:28:07,783 --> 00:28:10,746
Then you should save me
from American influences.

256
00:28:13,946 --> 00:28:15,627
He doesn't understand.

257
00:28:15,959 --> 00:28:19,183
He understands perfectly,
he just pretends not to.

258
00:28:19,540 --> 00:28:22,773
If only he knew how much Lawrence helped
me after what happened to Jeanne.

259
00:28:24,250 --> 00:28:26,500
But I would so like to be your friend

260
00:28:27,750 --> 00:28:29,074
As she was.

261
00:28:30,500 --> 00:28:31,500
No-one could be.

262
00:28:32,343 --> 00:28:34,000
Jeanne was the only friend
I had at The Hague.

263
00:28:34,237 --> 00:28:35,237
She was a true friend.

264
00:28:35,250 --> 00:28:36,750
Lawrence alone understood that

265
00:28:36,834 --> 00:28:38,752
But Lawrence is not a cure, Eline.

266
00:28:38,770 --> 00:28:44,609
He is not a remedy that you use
when you feel a bit nervous.

267
00:28:45,952 --> 00:28:47,477
Why, Elise, what are you thinking?

268
00:29:31,487 --> 00:29:34,145
From an admirer?
- No, from Vincent.

269
00:29:34,904 --> 00:29:38,930
What did he write?
- People should not say goodbye.

270
00:29:39,050 --> 00:29:40,656
What does that mean?

271
00:29:41,091 --> 00:29:44,534
Between friends, one never says goodbye.

272
00:29:45,108 --> 00:29:47,000
How deep! They might
actually leave, at last

273
00:29:47,053 --> 00:29:49,250
If it's not the opposite.
- What do you mean, the opposite?

274
00:29:49,193 --> 00:29:51,500
It could also mean that he's not leaving.

275
00:29:51,500 --> 00:29:54,260
Or else, I might leave myself.
- You, with those two?

276
00:29:54,250 --> 00:29:55,734
And why not?

277
00:29:55,750 --> 00:29:57,060
Don't forget what you taught me.

278
00:29:57,374 --> 00:29:59,039
Freedom! Cheerfulness!

279
00:29:59,159 --> 00:30:01,165
As a bird in the sky.

280
00:30:01,500 --> 00:30:03,250
I'd never have believed she
would learn so quickly!

281
00:31:34,232 --> 00:31:39,269
Oh.. my dear Lawrence!
You leave for your voyage tonight?

282
00:31:40,071 --> 00:31:43,234
I know him. He will insist you come
with us. You will say no.

283
00:31:43,354 --> 00:31:44,550
What do you mean?

284
00:31:45,100 --> 00:31:48,699
You're a very sweet cousin, fleeing from
destiny and seeking happiness...

285
00:31:53,032 --> 00:31:56,413
But he is not happiness either.
- Are you concerned?

286
00:31:57,425 --> 00:31:59,255
Are you also worried about what I do?

287
00:31:59,375 --> 00:32:01,844
No, you must understand
that I do not want it.

288
00:33:19,750 --> 00:33:21,000
...no, let me talk.

289
00:33:21,250 --> 00:33:23,750
...I was at the Serio,
as I am every day.

290
00:33:25,092 --> 00:33:26,750
And do you know who I saw? - No.

291
00:33:27,000 --> 00:33:28,678
I saw those two gentlemen.
They were there.

292
00:33:29,250 --> 00:33:32,000
And do you know who they
were with? With Eline, just so.

293
00:33:34,398 --> 00:33:40,250
I informed them, with a cold manner, that
I hoped we had seen the last of them.

294
00:33:40,250 --> 00:33:43,750
Why do you behave like such a boor.
- You understand nothing

295
00:33:46,197 --> 00:33:50,354
Listen to what I've heard.
Eline wants to go with them.

296
00:33:50,474 --> 00:33:55,820
Let her go on this voyage. Let her go
to Russia with those two.

297
00:33:55,855 --> 00:33:57,659
And do you think that is normal?

298
00:33:57,686 --> 00:34:00,387
I find it a disgrace! To use
a young girl like Eline...

299
00:34:00,500 --> 00:34:02,540
...to satisfy goodness knows what sort of fantasy.

300
00:34:02,514 --> 00:34:07,211
She is not as ignorant as you think.
- But this goes too far!

301
00:34:07,570 --> 00:34:10,394
Eline does not know that such
things even exist!

302
00:34:10,514 --> 00:34:14,090
And there is no need for her to know.

303
00:34:14,125 --> 00:34:17,227
I don't want my niece
to be used to cover up...

304
00:34:17,255 --> 00:34:23,137
...the disgusting love affair
between these gentlemen.

305
00:34:52,922 --> 00:34:54,481
Is everything alright, madam?

306
00:34:54,882 --> 00:34:55,667
Yes. Sure.

307
00:34:55,963 --> 00:34:58,631
It is just that I received your
telegram only this morning.

308
00:34:59,851 --> 00:35:03,311
If you require anything else...
- I do not require anything.

309
00:35:05,481 --> 00:35:07,659
Otherwise, just let me know.

310
00:35:07,879 --> 00:35:10,023
I will do that.

311
00:36:21,642 --> 00:36:26,139
Alone.. in a strange room...
And I counted on you.

312
00:36:26,348 --> 00:36:29,979
I thought we sort of agreed
upon you living with me?

313
00:36:30,536 --> 00:36:32,236
When you returned from Brussels?

314
00:36:32,654 --> 00:36:34,162
Only a sort of...

315
00:36:34,282 --> 00:36:37,273
You look so terrible.

316
00:36:37,393 --> 00:36:39,584
I want to take care of you.

317
00:36:40,063 --> 00:36:42,042
I'll take very good care of myself.

318
00:36:42,364 --> 00:36:44,168
But when you're here...

319
00:36:44,288 --> 00:36:46,714
I am able to look after you.

320
00:36:47,272 --> 00:36:49,111
I do not want to hurt you.

321
00:36:49,930 --> 00:36:52,814
It is like this, that you hurt me.

322
00:36:53,156 --> 00:36:56,642
Not half as much as it would be
with me around full days.

323
00:36:56,920 --> 00:37:00,267
But.. but I must be able to
help you somehow?

324
00:37:00,975 --> 00:37:03,485
My child, you need help.

325
00:37:04,043 --> 00:37:07,224
No, I do not need your help.

326
00:37:08,697 --> 00:37:10,082
I do not want help.

327
00:37:28,684 --> 00:37:30,165
Jeanny?

328
00:37:34,906 --> 00:37:36,178
Jeanny!

329
00:37:38,366 --> 00:37:39,307
Jeanny!

330
00:40:05,125 --> 00:40:06,153
Eline!

331
00:40:12,247 --> 00:40:13,328
Eline!

332
00:40:32,886 --> 00:40:33,662
Eline.

333
00:40:37,002 --> 00:40:40,139
Eline!
Where were you yesterday?

334
00:40:41,743 --> 00:40:42,902
Yesterday?

335
00:40:42,946 --> 00:40:45,752
We agreed you would come
for dinner every Wednesday.

336
00:40:54,775 --> 00:40:56,064
Perhaps we go now?

337
00:41:40,701 --> 00:41:43,098
So, my dear sister.
Were you ill?

338
00:41:43,490 --> 00:41:44,405
Not at all.

339
00:41:44,632 --> 00:41:47,673
We waited quite a while before
we sat down for dinner yesterday.

340
00:41:49,122 --> 00:41:53,723
Ah Ben.. they waited quite a while before they sat down for dinner.

341
00:42:01,393 --> 00:42:03,851
Eline? Eline.. come sit down.

342
00:42:04,470 --> 00:42:05,751
Would you like tea?

343
00:42:06,127 --> 00:42:10,318
Does auntie Eline want tea? No.
Auntie Eline does not want tea.

344
00:42:10,361 --> 00:42:12,827
Auntie Eline wants wine.

345
00:42:18,810 --> 00:42:21,216
I would like a glass of wine.

346
00:42:21,930 --> 00:42:23,316
At this hour?

347
00:42:23,436 --> 00:42:26,671
It makes me warm. I am so cold all
the time. So cold inside.

348
00:42:29,033 --> 00:42:31,526
If she wants a glass of wine, then
get her some.

349
00:42:39,336 --> 00:42:41,158
Don't you have things to occupy yourself?

350
00:42:42,518 --> 00:42:48,113
Emilie told me you visit the poor.
- Ah, all those clubs for ladies.

351
00:42:48,533 --> 00:42:51,531
Love lives, sharing each others burdens.

352
00:42:51,651 --> 00:42:53,274
Help for the homeless.

353
00:42:53,394 --> 00:42:55,130
Charity.

354
00:42:55,479 --> 00:42:59,158
I hate poor people. They smell.
- Eline! Mind the child!

355
00:42:59,724 --> 00:43:01,406
They smell. Aye Ben?

356
00:43:01,973 --> 00:43:05,545
But not you.. you will be rich.
You'll eat heaps...

357
00:43:05,589 --> 00:43:09,086
And you will have your pleasures.
And the rest can rot!

358
00:43:10,367 --> 00:43:11,168
Yes.

359
00:43:12,555 --> 00:43:16,076
I know I am turning insane.

360
00:43:16,196 --> 00:43:19,474
Eline. Mind your words.
The child can hear you.

361
00:43:20,328 --> 00:43:21,113
Ben...

362
00:43:22,239 --> 00:43:23,206
Ben listens...

363
00:43:24,270 --> 00:43:25,873
And what does he hear?

364
00:43:28,383 --> 00:43:30,266
What will he understand?

365
00:43:31,086 --> 00:43:33,639
You understand nothing, aye Ben?

366
00:43:34,345 --> 00:43:36,306
And that is why you are so happy.

367
00:43:37,266 --> 00:43:40,804
Oh my sweet Ben. How much I would
like to change place with you.

368
00:43:40,814 --> 00:43:44,726
Eline! You are truly crazy.

369
00:44:07,800 --> 00:44:10,737
We must be careful.

370
00:44:11,940 --> 00:44:16,349
The bronchitis can still turn into
a lung disease.

371
00:44:18,049 --> 00:44:19,129
You take your baths?

372
00:44:19,688 --> 00:44:21,962
Always hydrotherapies!

373
00:44:22,241 --> 00:44:23,845
It does not help at all.

374
00:44:26,548 --> 00:44:28,587
Do you eat properly?

375
00:44:28,867 --> 00:44:30,880
Bouillon. Litres of bouillon.

376
00:44:31,761 --> 00:44:34,201
And you sleep well?
- Yes. I sleep well.

377
00:44:40,695 --> 00:44:46,351
You do use only the medications
I prescribed exclusively?

378
00:44:46,718 --> 00:44:47,920
Yes, of course.

379
00:45:41,815 --> 00:45:42,730
Yes?

380
00:45:44,473 --> 00:45:46,834
Your bouillon.
- No. No bouillon.

381
00:45:47,104 --> 00:45:48,847
But it helps your recovery.

382
00:45:48,967 --> 00:45:52,334
And I tell you... no bouillon.

383
00:45:54,601 --> 00:45:56,693
I didn't mean to do that...

384
00:45:57,312 --> 00:45:59,935
but I am so warm and thirsty.

385
00:45:59,970 --> 00:46:02,698
Would you prefer something cold?
- No, I'm fine.

386
00:46:05,322 --> 00:46:08,390
Yes... could you send for some ice?

387
00:46:09,348 --> 00:46:10,576
A carafe frappé?

388
00:46:10,602 --> 00:46:15,116
No. Just a block of ice. As long as it
is cold, very cold.

389
00:46:15,325 --> 00:46:18,079
I will take care of it immediately.

390
00:46:18,199 --> 00:46:22,353
No. Later will be ok. This afternoon.
- As you wish.

391
00:47:31,449 --> 00:47:34,019
Paul. Frédérique.

392
00:47:36,792 --> 00:47:38,142
Paul? What's wrong?

393
00:47:38,395 --> 00:47:41,288
Can't you understand that we
want nothing to do with you?

394
00:47:42,510 --> 00:47:43,434
Understand?

395
00:47:44,183 --> 00:47:46,013
Why did you return, Eline?

396
00:47:48,472 --> 00:47:51,313
You are no longer Eline Vere.
- Elly!

397
00:47:53,626 --> 00:47:54,794
Elly!

398
00:48:02,784 --> 00:48:04,545
I am Eline Vere.

141 Mesdames et messiurs, dance au coin du feu
Ladies and gentlemen, dancing over near the fireplace

143 Vous verrez c'est merveilleux. Et c'est...
You'll see, he's marvellous,. And it's...

167 Ah, vous n'avez pas le droit de refuser.
Ce sont des vers admirables.
Ah, you're not allowed to refuse.
Your poetry is so divine

171 Etre admiree pourrait suffir a de beaux yeux
To be admired it suffices to have beautiful eyes

172 Les votres ont voulu rayonner et connaitre...
Yours wanted to radiate, and to know...

173 En plus vous le dominez
And more, you command...

181 ?

202 Autrement dit, ennuyeux.
In other words, boring

206 Vois-les si ca te chante --
de temps en temps.
See them if it ammuses you --
from time to time.

207 Il vient de me chercher ce matin
- Encore
He came looking for me again this morning
- Again!

209 Bien sur mais -- cela
me donne a penser.
Well, that gives me an idea.

210 Et a penser a quoi?
- Ah ca, mon petit, je le garder a moi
What about?
- Ah, that I'm keeping to myself

211 Mais je ne pense pas moins
But I still think it

212 Et ca c'est important car
tu sais bien que je ne pense jamais
And that's important because you know
I hardly ever think

213 De toutes facon il n'a rien a penser
In any case, there's nothing to think about.

214 A ton aise?
As you like.

215 Mais ne t'en fais pas
But don't get upset.

267 Mais je voudrais tant etre une amie puur toi
But I would so much like to be your friend

268 Comme elle.
As she was.

269 Personne ne le pourrait
Jeanne etait l'unique amie que
j'avais a la Haye Jeanne etait vrai
No-one could be.
Jeanne was the only friend I had at the Hague
She was a true friend.

270 Lawrence est le seul qui l'a compris
Lawrence alone understood that

278 Profond! Ils vont donc finir par partir
How deep! They might actually leave at last

279 A moins que ce ne sois pas le contraire.
Comment ca, le contraire?
If it's not the oppposite?
What do you mean, the opposite?

280 Cela peut aussi bien vouloir dire qu'il ne part pas
Ou alors je peux moi-meme partir
It could also mean that he's not leaving
Or else, I might leave myself

281 Toi, avec ces deux la?
Et pourquoi pas?
You, with those two?
And why not?

282 N'oublies pas ce que tu m'as appris
Don't forget what you taught me.

285 Je n'aurais jamais cru qu'elle apprendrais aussi vite
I'd never have believed she would learn so quickly.

297 ...satisfaire je ne sais quel fantasme
...to satisfy goodness knows what sort of fantasy.

Det ble "Nymphomaniac" på mandag, og "Her" i dag. Flott kinouke.

Til helga: "The Wolf of Wall Street" og "12 Years a Slave".
