Harddisk Vifte Mod

Anbefalte innlegg

Merk disclaimeren.

EDIT: Filmsnutt av vifta

Got a broken harddrive and a 80 mm (or larger) computerfan you dont use?

Make a HDfan!

No, not this type

But this :

its kinda crazy, but it works!

Im not gonna go totally tutorialish on you so ask if you want to know some more about the buildingprocess.

You need:

A standard 80mm computer fan (as in fan which blows air, not a computer geek)

ive used a 90mm taken from a PSU

And a harddrive you dont wanna use for its original purpose anymore.

I found one with only 1 disc, I think it was about 200megabytes

First you cut the fan out of its frame and cut the cables (you wont be needing them later)

Take the cover off the harddrive

Remove all the removeable parts.

Remove the engine from the fan so it can be mounted to the harddrive and used without spinning , this is kinda hard, so you can use a screw to fasten the fan to the engine instead. (I did the last thing)

Im not sure if all harddrives has this, but use the nut that fastens the disc to the rest of the harddrive, and put it on the rearside of the fan, (the side where the cables where going)

Then you need to make the nut stick to the fan, I think there are better ways of doing this, but I melted the plastic on the fan and made the nut fit.

like this:

the last part is easy, find 4 screws the right size and screw them into the harddrive where the nut was before, then cut of the heads and put the fan on mounting the nut with the screws, you might wanna fasten it with additional nuts on each screw and maybe fill it with glue just to be sure Make sure the fan is balanced.

Your result would probably look like this. Now connect it to a 12v molex connector in your computer (do not connect any data cables like the IDE cable) and wait for the result. If you got a spare PSU, you might wanna use this to test it with first, because the fan could loosen, and get throwed into the air (happend to me the first time, before i fastened it with additional nuts :p) The PSU could also get overloaded, so be careful.

It got a pretty nice airflow, but you should not use it inside a computercase,

its just not meant to be :p

Disclaimer:

Only do this if you got experience in building computers.

I would never have used this fan in my new, expensive computer. No way. and neither should you. its just a simple experiment showing its possible. Use equipment you dont care for, you wont be able to recover data from your disk after this. dont do this at home, or.. do it at home, just dont hurt anyone or anything that would hurt anyone.
