Ubuntu: Pinning, egne pakker, etc.

Heisann.

Mixing releases, rolling own packages, config files

Hi. After several years as a Gentoo user, I am now tired of the time-consuming package manager and increasingly overstrained community. While a change of distro is at least weeks away, I have started testing Ubuntu on a second partition, to get a feel with it. I've always loved apt-get, so I'm guessing Ubuntu will be the right choice for me.

I have several questions, though:

o Can I mix releases as in Debian? That is, can I run breezy as a base system, and install for example fglrx-drivers and KDE from dapper? Is this just done with pinning as it is in Debian?

o Is there a guide to rolling ones own packages somewhere, or shall I just follow Debian guides? This is something I've never done in Debian before, but something I've got QUITE dependent on while running Gentoo. Related to rolling one's own packages: Is there a document somewhere stating Ubuntu policies for file placement? I wouldn't want to roll a lot of packages that stores files in "wrong" (in the Ubuntu sense) places.

o Configuration files! In Gentoo, when I needed something changed, I changed the program's config file. It was as easy as that - there was no system-wide tool that would ever need to manage the config files, so I could just edit them at will. I know Debian, and thus probably also Ubuntu, has a lot of config file managing tools, for example for Xorg. Is it still safe to edit xorg.conf manually? For which packages should I steer clear of manual editing of config files?

o Hmm, just thought of two more things. What is the preferred way of blacklisting kernel modules? I cannot seem to find a blacklist file already in existance.

o If I want to run an install that never installs Gnome, I have to run an expert install, right?

Thanks for any replies. I hope these questions aren't answered elsewhere - my own experience clearly tells me that there's nothing more annoying than answering questions that are already answered elsewhere.

By the way: Ubuntu is, so far, looking good!
