It will also walk you through checking if you have the required content before installing it. Bare minimum requirements Windows Media Connect Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Access to your PC with a user account granted Administrator-level access A method of connecting your Xbox 360 to your PC on an IP-based network (i.e. Your Xbox and PC are both connected to a router via the proper ethernet cables) Windows Media Center Extender Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Access to your PC with a user account granted Administrator-level access A method of connecting your Xbox 360 to your PC on an IP-based network (i.e. Your Xbox and PC are both connected to a router via the proper ethernet cables) Accessing your system’s Add or Remove Programs menu will be referred to numerous times in this FAQ so please take “access the Add or Remove Programs menu” as following the following steps: Click the “Start” button on your desktop Click the “Control Panel” menu Click “Add or Remove Programs” If the “Show Updates” checkbox at the top right of the screen is not checked, check it Wait for the list area to populate Requirement 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2 Click the "Start" button your Desktop, and right click on "My Computer", and select "Properties" (You can also press the Windows Key + Pause/Break on your keyboard) If you see “Service Pack 2” you may omit the rest of the steps in Requirement 1, otherwise continue Go the the Windows Update website Click “Custom” Uncheck any updates relating to the “.NET Framework” On the left side of the screen, click “Install Updates” Verify you have not selected any updates relating to the “.NET Framework”, and click “Install Updates” yet again A window will appear displaying the progress of your update When the update is finished restart your computer Requirement 2, .NET Framework 1.1 Access the Add or Remove Programs menu Scroll down until you reach the first program starting with “M” Scroll through these updates If you see “.NET Framework 1.1” Click “Remove” Click “Yes” Follow the on-screen instructions Restart your computer Go the Microsoft Downloads website Choose your preferred language under the “Change Language” section if need be Click the “Download” button on the top of the page Select “Save” Save the item to your Desktop When the download is completed double click the icon for the “dotnetfx.exe” file on your desktop Follow the on-screen instructions guiding you through the installation process Once the installation is finished restart your computer Requirement 3, .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Access the Add or installation process Once the installation is finished restart your computer Requirement for Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional Edition, and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 If you are using a third party personal firewall such as Zone Alarm, configure your firewall software to allow communication between the computer you are using and the Xbox 360 according to the information listed: On Microsoft’s Support Website (for Windows Media Connect and Windows Media Center Extender) According to the ports listed On Microsoft’s Media Center Website (for Windows Media Center Extender) According to the step-by-steps listed On Microsoft’s Media Center Website (scroll down to the “Troubleshoot network firewall issues” section, for Windows Media Center Extender) If you are using a router with a built-in firewall, ensure it is not blocking communication between your Xbox 360 and your computer Reset the router to its default settings Configure the firewall according to the ports listed on Microsoft’s Support Website The proper services are running on your computer Click the “Start” button on your desktop Click “Control Panel” Click “Administrative Tools” Click “Services” Scroll down to “Universal Plug and Play Device Host” Right click on it, and click “Properties” If the service is not set to start automatically, set the “Startup type” to “Automatic” If the service is not started, click “Start” Scroll up to “SSDP Discovery Service” Right click on it, and click “Properties” If the service is not set to start automatically, set the “Startup type” to “Automatic” If the service is not started, click “Start” Installing Windows Media Connect on Windows XP Home Edition, and Windows XP Professional Edition Go the Microsoft Downloads website Choose your preferred language under the “Change Language” section if need be Click the “Download” button on the top of the page Select “Save” Save the item to your Desktop Turn on your Xbox 360 without a disc in the drive, or by using the eject button adjacent to the DVD tray and ensure it is on the first tab of the Xbox 360 dashboard When the download is completed double click the icon for the “XboxXPSP2-(language abbreviation, i.e. ENU)” file on your desktop Click “Next” (note you can use the Alt-Tab key combination on your keyboard to navigate between the installer and this FAQ) Choose whether or not to accept or decline the agreement, you will not be able to continue if you decline Click “Next” The installer will go through an assortment of installation status screens, when it displays “Your Xbox 360 is now authorized for use with Windows Media Center Connect” click “Next” Click “Finish” If you have specific folders you would like to make available to the Xbox 360 continue, otherwise omit the rest of this section Click the “Start” button on your Desktop Hover over “All Programs”, and go to “Windows Media Connect” Click the “Sharing” button Click “Add” Click “Browse” and choose the folder you would like to share Enter a name to describe the folder Choose if you would like to make the media available to only the Xbox 360, specific other devices, or all devices on your home network Repeat steps 17 through 20 for each folder you would like to add On your Xbox 360 console go to the “Media” tab, and select “Music” Select “Computer” Select “Yes, Continue” Select the computer listed there You should now see all of the music you are sharing using Windows Media Connect Installing Windows Media Connect and Windows Media Center Extender on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Click the “Start” button on your Desktop Click “Control Panel” Click “Administrative Tools” Click “Services” Scroll down to “Fast User Switching” Right click on it, and select “Properties” If it is not set to “Automatic” start, change the startup type to “Automatic” If the service is not started, click “Start” Close the “Services” window, and any windows opened while using it Click the back button on the top left of the screen Select “User Accounts” Select “Change the way users log on and off” Ensure “Fast User Switching is enabled” Close any windows you opened while following steps 1 through 13 Visit Xbox.com’s PC Setup page to determine the download you need for Media Center Extender If the page was able to determine the update you need click “Next”, otherwise skip to step 6 Click “Save” Click “Browse” Select your Desktop Wait until the file is done downloading, then go to step 10 Access the Add or Remove Programs men Scroll down until all the way until you see “Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005” If you see “Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005” download the light version otherwise chose the full version. Turn on your Xbox 360 without a disc in the drive, or by using the eject button adjacent to the DVD tray and ensure it is on the first tab of the Xbox 360 dashboard Go to the “Media” tab, and select “Media Center” Double click the setup icon for the installer version you downloaded Wait for the files to finish extracting Click “Next” (note you can use the Alt-Tab key combination on your keyboard to navigate between the installer and this FAQ) Choose whether or not to accept or decline the agreement, you will not be able to continue if you decline Click “Next” The installer will go through an assortment of installation status screens, when it displays “Settings” along with a message below it, click “Next” The screen will display a status screen, once that has passed click “Next” On your Xbox 360, press the “A” button on your controller while selecting the “Media Center” icon If you are prompted about a slow Network Connection select “Continue” and press the “A” button on your controller, and although this error may just seem like an annoyance it is correct. You may want to consider upgrading to an 802.11a network. Enter the setup key displayed on the Xbox 360 into the corresponding boxes on the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender setup screen, and click “Next” On your Xbox 360, promptly press “Continue” after the previous step Both the Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender Setup screens will display status screens, once these pass your Xbox 360 should connect to your Media Center PC Click “Next” after the status screen Setup will now setup shared folders for Windows Media Connect, you can click “Find Music Later” and click “Next” should you choose not to wait Setup will now take you through a network performance tuner, follow the step-by-step instructions on-screen Once the network performance tuner is finished, click “Finish” or the “More Suggestions” button if you would like to learn more about improving your network performance Click “Ok”, which will restart your computer If you have specific folders you would like to make available to the Xbox 360 continue, otherwise omit the rest of this section Startup your computer, and logon if you haven’t done so already Click the “Start” button on your Desktop Hover over “All Programs”, and go to “Windows Media Connect” Click the “Sharing” button Click “Add” Click “Browse” and choose the folder you would like to share Enter a name to describe the folder Choose if you would like to make the media available to only the Xbox 360, specific other devices, or all devices on your home network Repeat steps 48 through 51 for each folder you would like to add If the installation of Windows Media Center Extender, or Windows Media Connect failed Restart your computer, and try connecting again if applicable, otherwise follow this procedure: Access the Add or Remove Programs menu If you installed Windows Media Connect scroll down to the “W” section until you find “Windows Media Connect”, click “Remove” Click “Next” If prompted to continue un-installation click “Yes” Once the uninstall process is completed click “Finish” If you installed Media Center Extender scroll down to the “M” section until you find “Media Center Extender”, click “Remove” Click “Yes” when prompted A status screen will appear listing the current state of the un-installation, when it is finished click “Finish” Restart your computer and log back in Click the “Start” button on your desktop Click “Control Panel” Click “Administrative Tools” Click “Event Viewer” Right click on each of the Application, System, and Security logs and select “Clear All Entries” click “No” each time you are prompted Disable (but do not exit) any sort of Personal Firewall software you have running Run the steps you used to install the actual media software Once the installation completes (successfully or not) go back to the Event Viewer, and copy down any events that look like they were caused by an error Copy down the Brand name and model number of any networking equipment the Xbox 360 and PC are connected through such as: Routers Switches Hubs Modems Gateways Wireless Bridges Copy down how exactly your Xbox 360 is connecting to your PC Copy down any other relevant information you may find helpful in diagnosing your problem (such as problems installing the .NET Framework, Security alerts, specific error messages, and the like) Create a post in the Xbox 360 Media Connectivity Forum with the details you copied above, with a descriptive title of the problem If you are having problems with the setup application failing, try the steps posted here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- pro·gram·mer(n.): An organisim that can turn caffeine into code.
