Anbefales.

Ian Doyle: Has anyone ever been more deserving of a medal than Liverpool FC’s Dirk Kuyt?

by Ian Doyle, The Liverpool Post

Mar 2 2012

LONG after the final whistle and with Wembley practically deserted save a few ground staff and straggling media, an unmistakable shiny glimmer caught the dim remaining light.

There, standing pitchside with family and friends and clutching the League Cup trophy as though his life depended on it, was a beaming Dirk Kuyt.

It may be some time before the smile erodes from the Dutchman’s face. And small wonder.

Infamously, not since Emlyn Hughes won the League and UEFA Cup in 1973 had a prominent Liverpool player had to wait so long for silverware.

Of course, the duck has been broken just as he has lost a regular first-team place in the side under Kenny Dalglish.

The Liverpool manager has one eye set firmly on the future and, closing in on his 32nd birthday this summer, Kuyt has found tough competition for places with the midfield arrivals of Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam and the presence of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll up front.

That’s likely to only increase next season when Dalglish, armed with further backing from Fenway Sports Group, goes shopping again in the transfer window.

But has there ever been a Liverpool player quite so deserving of a medal than the likeable Kuyt?

The Dutchman may not have the talent of a Steven Gerrard, the guile of a Suarez or the presence of a Jamie Carragher, but what he does possess is a desire and commitment that made him one of the first names on the teamsheet under Rafael Benitez.

Oh, and the uncanny and immeasurably valuable trait of scoring on the big occasion.

The list is lengthy. Kuyt has netted in every round of the Champions League – including the shoot-out winner in the 2007 semi-final against Chelsea, and then a strike against Milan in the final – registered in four derbies against Everton and scored a hat-trick against Manchester United.

Then there was Sunday. No doubt frustrated at missing out on the starting line-up, Kuyt was eventually unleashed during extra time.

Within five minutes he had scored – a trademark Kuyt strike, with a miss-hit followed by an improvised screamer – and then, after Cardiff City’s dramatic late equaliser, Kuyt kept his nerve to convert in the shoot-out.

The importance of that spot-kick cannot be underestimated. With Gerrard and Adam having missed, Kuyt simply had to score.

That, though, is a mark of the man. And why Kuyt has long since etched a genuinely legendary status among the Anfield faithful.

Like the Utrecht and Feyenoord supporters before them, they see a player who pours his heart and soul into the team.

Sure, it doesn’t always work for the Dutchman – witness his lengthy wait for a Premier League goal this season – yet he never shirks, and his relentless work ethic makes him not only a nuisance to defenders, but also sets an example to his teammates.

It’s why Kuyt will remain a vital part of the squad for the next few years. He may no longer be a regular but, along with stalwarts Gerrard and Carragher, the Dutchman embodies what it takes to be a success at Anfield.

Arteta says 'thanks' to LFC:

...

I've since looked back at the TV images of when I was being taken off and just want to show my appreciation to the Liverpool fans at Anfield. It is touching to receive that response from the fans of a great club when I am leaving the pitch injured. Thank-you.

I also want to thank Pepe Reina and the Liverpool players who have sent me messages of support and friendship, this again is really touching and just shows class from a great football club.

''The official Liverpool Supporters' Club, told BBC Radio Five Live: "The Liverpool supporters who were actually inside the ground gave Alan Smith a standing ovation as he left the field.''

''Huge ovations from supporters of both teams''

1. Sheit, da har man uflaks.

2. De fleste klapper, men buing overdøver? Jauda... De fleste.
