UCS2005 - User Configuration Standard 2005

UCS2005 - User Configuration Standard 2005

Aim: USCS's goal is to set a world-wide standard for user friendly enviroments and usability,
with a  rating system and approval-limits for allowance to carry the UCS-brand, amongst manufacturers
of digital equipment, mainly Stationary and Portable Computer systems.

The mainstream target-comsumers have to date, statistically and in general, a limited knowledge-level
when it comes to capabilities and limitations of both hardware and software solutions delivered by
manufacturers in a OEM-state. This has been often used widely to the benefit of the manufacturers
worldwide at the expense of the end-consumers and at the expense of the platforms used by end-users.

Initiative: Due to excess use of markeding-effects, like advertisement, on personal end-user equipment
like Stationary PC'er and Laptops, the UCS board feels there needs to be made some changes, putting
the level of advertisement and level of configurability into the hands of the end-consumers themselves.
This initiative is taken to ensure that a complete system is as much WYSIWYG (What you see, is what you get)
as possible to end-consumers when buying products from retailers or via E-commerce.

The conditions for approval, are general in terms, so that any complete product-solution can apply for
approval without beeing dependant of the system's standard hardware and/or software combination.

UCS2005 is a industrial approval-program, that allows manufacturers to license, sell, supply their equipement
to the consumer-market as UCS2005-approved units if they get a minimum total score of 10 on the UCS2005-rating and meet the minimal conditions required ( marked with "*" and "**" in the list-diagram below. ).

The UCS2005 rating-list includes the following conditions met in a complete product aimed at end-user sales
(Single component products featured as a unit in complete solution OEM-packages does not fall under the
UCS2005-approval program, and can not apply for approval.):

Section 2: None-critical user-configurability: The following subsection conditions does not need to be met, but can
give additional ratingscore or subtract total-score from the unit's UCS2005 overall rating:

A: Supplementary softwares solutions:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

-2 The system OS/OEM-software setup is delivered with supplementary freeware or shareware other than the OS itself
that require/asks the end-consumer to buy any other products or commercial versions of the application in any
  form.

-1 The system OS/OEM-software setup is delivered with supplementary applications other than the OS itself,
  that require/asks the end-consumer to upgrade licenses/payment after a given time-period.
This often is the case with solutions like commercial antivirus applications.

-1 The system OS/OEM-software setup is delivered with supplementary applications other than the OS itself that enforces
popup advertisement or popup loading logo's after or when the OS-GUI is currently loading. This is often the case
with Commercial antivirus applications, which should pay attention to the user's security more than furfilling their own
  advertisement-need.

-1 Has a software-controlled volume function-key[FN] button and at the same time lacking a hardware-based side-button/wheel for
audio-volume, thus completaly depending on a driver-software to function. These types of volume-solutions often conflict and/or
does not work properly during fullscreen applications like 3D-games etc.

+2 The system OS/OEM-software setup is delivered with 1 or more supplementary commercial software that does not advertise
its presence with logo/ad/loading-popups at OS/GUI-startup, and does not ask the user to lengthen any payment license.

+2 The system OS/OEM-software setup is delivered with 1 or more supplementary full-version commercial software that does not
advertise its presence with logo/ad/loading-popups at OS/GUI-startup, and does not ask the user to lengthen any payment licenses,

+2 The system OS/OEM-software setup is delivered with 1 or more supplimentary freeware released (not beta) applications.

B: Supplementary hardware solutions:
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

+2 Has hardware-based volume-control buttons/wheel that works independantly of software-drivers.

+1 Has hardware-based volume-control buttons/wheel that works dependantly of software-drivers.

+3 Has BIOS-setting option to turn on/off screen-stretch of lower resolutions than the LCD-native resolution on the internal
LCD-panel of the unit. This allows for a smaller, sharper, and more discrete OS loading-logo for OS'es that has a
low-resolution loading-logo which often becomes unaturally large and unsharp/distorted on high resolution LCD-screens.
This also allows for the user to decide if they want to watch lower resolutions when working with lower-resolution
fullscreen applications stretched to fullscreen, or smaller in 1:1 ratio.

+3 Hardware-based controls/buttons for DVD/CD-play/stop/ff/rr (general management controls) options.

+3 Configurable hardware buttons placed somewhere near the keyboard or on the side of the unit, configurable via a background
  process/application/TSR panel/launch application.

+1 Does not use the system's main RAM/Memory-units for GPU/graphics solution, but uses it's own dedicated memory solution.

Evt. forslag til mere industriell navne-betegnelse er også velkomne.
