What are SFV files?

SFV stands for Simple File Verification. The way SFV works is by providing a text file that contains two lists within. The first is a list of files [that can be of any type such as mp3, zip, mpg, etc...] and the second is the CRC32 value for each of the files in the first list. An SFV file usualy ends with the .SFV or .sfv extension.

 

What are SFV files used for?

A .SFV file is used to ensure that the files in its list are not corrupt and that files are not missing from the entire set of files sent from one computer to another over the Internet. Helium allows you to read SFV files via its SFV checker utility. It takes both lists inside the .SFV file and makes sure that the CRC32 values in the second list match the files in the first list. If the CRC32 value doesn't match the current file's CRC32 value then the file is not an exact replica or copy of the original which might be a problem.

SFV files contain the checksums of the rest of the files. You use that file in another progam and it checks all the files to make sure they transferred OK. The program you open the files (and creat SFV files with) is hkSFV. Google it to find it.
