2.1 TCP vs. UDP

TCP and UDP are both data transmission protocols used for streaming. Both protocols run on top of the underlying Internet Protocol (IP), which specifies the format of data packages. TCP as a data protocol is responsible for verifying the correct delivery of data between server and client. The protocol establishes a virtual connection between a destination and a source. Typically for data communication networks, data can be lost in the intermediate network. With TCP, this is solved as a result of TCP’s ability to detect errors or lost data and to trigger retransmission until the data is correctly and completely received.

Conversely, UDP is a connectionless protocol. Unlike TCP, UDP provides very few error recovery services, offering instead a direct way to send and receive data over an IP network. It's used primarily for broadcasting messages over a network and does not in any way assure the delivery of data. There is no ensured retransmission of lost data in the intermediate network when using UDP.
