We recently visited the game show "Igrograd" (City of Games) and were impressed by the great number of quality projects presented there. Among them were: S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Telladar Chronicles, Cossacks 2, Heart of Eternity and many others. All the projects are very promising, but we were most amazed by the RPG/action project Xenus - presented by Deep Shadows. The developers from Deep Shadows were friendly and sociable, unlike the other developers at the expo. As we spoke with them, many interesting facts about the Game were revealed to us; then we entered the world of Xenus ourselves… and now we are ready to share all the things we found out: The first thing we saw in the beta was the main menu. It is really cool and stylised - all the menu items are written on bullets (which are connected to the chain ammo that leads to a machinegun), they move up and down as you navigate through the menu. It is easy to use and gets you right in the atmosphere of the game. One of the best menus we have ever seen 8-) The game: "I have appeared somewhere in the jungle. It's raining. I can hear the sound of birds sitting in the trees and insects hiding in the grass. I walk out of the jungle and onto the road that leads to some kind of military camp. As I approach, I can see that this is a rebel base - a heavily guarded one ;-). Although guards seem to be quite friendly, I guess it's my mission to clean up this area. I take out my AK-47 and headshot the closest enemy. The guard on the tower sounds the alarm. Oh, this is what I was expecting The rebels quickly ran out from the houses and started shooting at me... I'm fighting back… Damn, they are pretty smart… the rain stops and sunlight falls on my dead body . I guess, this death will be a lesson for me…" The next thing we saw were the graphics. I would say that they weren't amazing, but really good and would run smoothly on a middle-end machine (with GeForce3 on board). However the game has some cool graphics features like: pixel shaded water and vertex shaded grass and trees (using DirectX 8 engine); highly detailed weapons and vehicles; the day-night cycles and weather effects look really awesome, as do waterfalls and explosions. Also, the developers informed us that they are adding bump-map technology to the engine. This will dramatically improve visual appearance of the game (you can see this technology in Far Cry). Now let's get to the gameplay: The in-game territory of Colombia is huge (about 625 square km or 244 square miles): most of it is covered by jungle with several cities, villages and military bases. Moving through the jungle we met a lot of birds and different kinds of insects. Your enemies in the jungle are snakes, which can be easily spotted on the ground, and jaguars - fast and very dangerous. The cities in the game are alive: citizens are working (traders, labourers, etc.) or just walking down the streets, Cars are driving along the roads and the the city is not safe: if you are not careful, you can be killed by a car on the road or you can even die in a street fight between factions (both of these things happened to me ). You can talk to all the people you see: several questions will appear in the lower part of the screen for which you can get your answer. As for military bases, they are only occupied by soldiers and can either be friendly or hostile to you depending on your reputation with them. "I am in the jungle again This time I'll be smarter. I'll hide in the grass and clean the base with sniper rifle. Hmm, I can hear footsteps… and a roar! … Something is behind me! …I'm hugging the ground once again… This jaguar isn't stupid at all…" Our hero wears a backpack. Which, when opened looks just like an inventory in any RPG game like Diablo and uses the same click and drag system. It's easy and fast. But you can't carry Xenus's entire weaponry in your backpack, because it's size is restricted by weight and volume. So you have to choose what to take: more bullets or more medicine. The amount of weaponry in Xenus is impressive: different knives, pistols, rifles, machine guns, grenades and even a crossbow 8-) Every weapon has an alternative "precision targeting mode" (iron sights - like in Call of Duty) activated with a right click. There is also some cool stuff like a camera, which is used to take pictures (and screenshots ). I'm not really sure what these pictures are used for; it's possible that some missions might require picture taking. The amount of vehicles is no less impressive then the quantity of weapons. You can find in the world of Xenus some very old fashioned cars, as well as the more modern Hummer and Ferrari. Cars movement is incredibly realistic - driving a Ferrari in the jungle was enough to realise that: car was shaking and skidding on the hilly surface and it has become stuck after crossing the first small river . Vehicles can suffer damage and require gasoline. The helicopter's physics looked quite strange (they couldn't even fly above 30-40 meters!) and are kind of arcade, but I think this will be corrected in the final release of the game. It's a pity that we couldn't find the submarine to test No one could. And now the most interesting part of the game - fights with the enemy. In the very beginning of our playing the game, the developers suggested to us to use a more stealthy approach. Soon we found out why It's because enemies AI is INCREDIBLE! We've never seen such smart bots before! They are truly behaving like real humans and are extremely hard to kill, even though they can die from a simple headshot. The enemy soldiers crouch and sneak, try to surround you, hide when reloading and roll to a safe place when you're trying to hit them. They call for backup, when you have almost overrun them! And your only advantage in this fight is a larger amount of health and an ability to use medpacks. But is it possible to kill more then 30 soldiers in open fight? No. The only way to win is to be a shadow - hide in the grass or the jungle, where enemy (who use a realistic line of sight and hearing) can't see and hear you. The victory is on the side of the smartest in this game "I am piloting the helicopter and thinking about my current mission: to destroy 3 tanks, which were stolen by the rebels. Their base isn't far away, only 3,5 miles to the north, but I can only dream of a peaceful flight. Just now my radar has spotted something on the ground. An ambush (!): several soldiers, possibly with a jeep and mobile missile station. I am trying to lower my altitude and I seem to touch the ground. My radar can no longer see the target, but I know that their radar can't see me either. I target and fire the missiles at the enemy's last known position. Missed! These "cunning Columbians" have moved to a new position. I pull up on the helicopter's flight control joystick, looking around, trying to locate rebels missile station. I can't see them at all! Oh! They have called some air support - an enemy helicopter has been sighted on the horizon. Ok, if it's war they want than war they shall have! With a manoeuvre I begin an air-fight and dodge the enemy helicopter's missile … but wait! What is this warning about? My radar has located a missile targeting from the ground! I need to pull d… Oops and another fantastic explosion 8-)…" Of course there were a lot of bugs in the beta. The developers promised to get rid of them. And we believe them. They have already done a great job in creating such big and alive world. And it won't be a problem for them to make it a little bit better. Playing the game was fun, exciting and interesting. Everyone at the exhibition could play Xenus without any time limit. That wasn't a good idea No one could stop playing! - Some of the players were forced to leave the keyboard and mouse and some of the "hardcore gamers" were even removed still in their chairs . People played with a smile on their faces, like when one of your dreams comes true. This is the game I've always been waiting for. Our most "wanted" game! We hope, that it is yours too ;-) That's all! Lenke til kommentar
