you cannot enter the BIOS-Setup most probably is due to a missing DIAGS-partition.

A.

For many long years COMPAQ-notebooks had their proprietary way of handling the BIOS:

All of the Setup- and Diagnostics-files are stored on a special DIAGS-partition, which has to be the *first* partition on the HD.

There's *NO* access to the BIOS otherwise (except booting from the "Setup"-diskette [wich in most cases will not be at hand when really needed])

If this partition is not there, it has to be created. Problem is that it has to be the *first* one on the HDD.

So: If the partition is not there (if F10 does not work), the HD has to be put into a virgin state to start with.

Therefore: First thing to do is BACKUP all of the data.

B.

Problem is that the partition has to be cerated from the Diagnostics- and Setup-diskettes.

As you can not boot from a diskette at present, you are in a true Catch-22 situation.

I therefore would suggest to try the Fn+F11 trick to set the BIOS back to factory settings (which would include booting from a floppy.

Way to go:

Hold the Fn-key pressed down and switcg power on whilst tapping continuosly on F11.

The LEDs will cycle flashing. Let this run 5 times.

Thereafter you should recieve the POSt error-message "options not set".

Save the changes.

You should be able to boot from a floppy teherafter.

C.

Then use a DOS-diskette to boot and use FDISK to delete all of the partitions on the HDD.

As said: The DIAGS-partition has to come first.

Then do the following:

Go the download area and collect the needed Servíce Packs, follow the instructions.

SP12906 - Personal Computer Diagnostics v. 10.39 A (10 Mar 00)

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/no...nload/7106.html

HOW TO USE:

1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive. The file downloaded

is a self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number.

2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. Pressing

"Space Bar" to confirm the unpacking of files creates a new directory folder in

the download directory. The diskette image file, the image extraction tool, and

the batch file to create the diskette are unpacked into this newly created

directory.

3. After the Diagnostic diskette has been created, you may delete the

self-extracting file downloaded in step one, as well as the directory folder

and files created in step two.

4. Go to the system that you want to run PC Diagnostics on and power down the

system.

5. Place the newly created Diagnostics diskette in Drive A:, and power up the

system.

6. The system should then boot to Compaq PC Diagnostics.

Den maskinen passer vel strengt tatt bedre i søpla uansett? ;-)
