Originally, Dell touted the XPS as being driven by Intel's new Prescott (Intel Pentium 4 E Series) processor. Intel's newest chips didn't make it into Dell's final unit, but the specs are still impressive.

-1GB DDR 400-MHz dual-channel memory

-60GB 7,200-rpm hard drive

-Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

The Inspiron XPS marks the first notebook we've seen with dual-channel memory support, a feature that's been available in desktops since early last year. Today's processors are data-crunching monsters limited by memory performance. Dual-channel memory increases data flow to the processor for increased overall system performance.

 

The Inspiron XPS also wins marks for being the first Windows-based notebook we've seen to integrate a DVI interface for pure digital connections to external displays.

 

Large and in charge

 

Weighing in at 9 pounds and measuring a hefty 14.1 inches by 10.8 inches by 2 inches, the XPS isn't too portable. But in return you get some impressive performance under the hood. The Inspiron XPS comes with a premium $3,350 price tag for the tricked-out configuration we received. We all know that the veterans (Voodoo, Alienware, and Hypersonic) in the gaming notebook space aren't sitting still. Keep an eye out for our roundup of gaming notebooks in a few weeks.
