Steve Moyer is vice president of storage software engineering for Micron Technology, a new corporate member of The Linux Foundation.

Storage industry technologies are undergoing a major shift and operating systems must evolve to keep pace with the change. That's one reason why Micron Technology, a global leader in advanced semiconductor systems including DRAM, NAND and NOR Flash, recently joined the Linux Foundation as a corporate member.

“Micron recognizes the importance of partnering with the Linux community and other providers of storage software to ensure that customers have a great experience with and get the full benefit of our advanced memory products,” said Steve Moyer, vice president of storage software engineering for Micron Technology.

Here, Moyer tells us more about the company, how it uses Linux, and what's ahead for the storage industry.

Linux.com: What is Micron Technology?

Steve Moyer: Micron Technology is a leader in the design and development of advanced memory and semiconductor technology. Micron’s product portfolio includes innovative volatile and non-volatile memory technologies and solid state storage solutions.

Why did you join the Linux Foundation?

Moyer: Linux is a key IT infrastructure component for many Micron customers. We are committed to working with the Linux community to ensure Micron memory and storage solutions provide a great customer experience when used with Linux. We also believe that for customers to get the full benefit of emerging memory and storage technologies operating systems must evolve and Micron wants to partner with the Linux community to help drive this evolution.

What interesting or innovative trends are you witnessing in tech and what role does Linux play in them?

Moyer: The storage industry is undergoing a fundamental shift toward solid state drives (SSD) and emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies. To fully exploit the capabilities of these technologies the operating system and its storage subsystems must continue to evolve. As the leading open source operating system Linux is well-positioned to play an important role in bringing the benefits of new memory technologies to end-users.

How is Micron Technology participating in that innovation?

Moyer: Micron Technology is a leader in the design and development of innovative non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies and SSD storage solutions. As such Micron recognizes the importance of partnering with the Linux community and other providers of storage software to ensure that customers have a great experience with and get the full benefit of our advanced memory products.

Anything else you'd like to include?

Moyer: Micron is excited to be a sponsor of the Linux Foundation and we look forward to strengthening and evolving our relationship with the Linux community.

Steve Moyer is vice president of storage software engineering for Micron Technology. He is responsible for leading Micron’s strategy to design, develop and deploy storage software solutions addressing the needs of virtualization, big data, database management and cloud-based IT. Moyer was appointed to his current position in April 2014.

Prior to Micron, Moyer’s career included senior leadership at both major corporations and technology start-ups including Dell, Panasas, and Transarc. He also served as a research fellow at Emory University.

He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from Binghamton University and a doctorate in computer science from the University of Virginia.
