Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) agreed to buy privately held Whiptail, a provider of solid state memory systems, for $415 million, giving Cisco new tools for data storage and virtualization.

Cisco, the world's largest supplier of Internet routers and switches, has inked a string of relatively small acquisitions as it tries to evolve into a less hardware-intensive information-technology provider.

Cisco said it plans to use Whiptail's systems to strengthen its Unified Computing System strategy and enhance application performance by integrating Whiptail's scalable solid state memory into the UCS computing architecture. Cisco said using Whiptail's memory systems will simplify customers' data center environments by providing the required performance in a fraction of the floor space.

"We are focused on providing a converged infrastructure including compute, network and high-performance solid state that will help address our customers' requirements for next-generation computing environments," said Paul Perez, vice president and general manager of the Cisco computing systems product group.

Once the acquisition is completed, Whiptail employees will be integrated into the computing systems product group led by Mr. Perez. The deal is expected to close by the first quarter of Cisco's current fiscal year.

In July, the company agreed to pay $2.7 billion for cybersecurity firm Sourcefire Inc., a deal that reflects a boom in demand for cybersecurity expertise as companies and consumers become more aware of hacking threats.

The company last month said it would cut 4,000 jobs, or 5% of its workforce, despite reporting an 18% jump in profit in its fourth fiscal quarter. Cisco blamed the decision largely on a disappointing economic recovery.

Shares closed Monday at $23.92 and were up 0.6% premarket. The stock is up 22% so far in 2013.
