I realize baseball expressions are quite foreign to most Norwegians but this is the most correct answer. Hitting a baseball in a game is a duel between the pitcher and the batter. The pitcher tries to throw the ball over the pentagon shaped "plate" or base using a variety of techniques to elude the batter and at the professional level can be as fast as 160 km/hour, sometimes striking the batter. It is often a intense, scary moment, not knowing if you will be "beaned" by the pitcher with a fastball.

 

In order to hit the ball, the batter must "step up to the plate" and "face the music", It is most often used to motivate someone who is a little frightened about doing something. Other similar expressions:

 

Be a man.

Take charge.

Don't be a wuss.

Give it a shot.
