What to do in Oslo?

Anbefalte innlegg

Hello all. I'm sorry for posting in English, but we're planning a week or so trip to Oslo next July and we need local advices of how to survive there. We're trying to keep it cheap - just backpacks, a tent and public transportation. Here's some questions, you can answer in English or Norwegian - we are truly thankful for your replies.

What would be the perfect place(s) to set up a tent for a night near the city centre (~10 km tops)? Possibly near the ocean? And so that there's a bus connection nearby?

Is there a website for public transportation in Oslo area with timetables and bus lines' map? What do the bus tickets cost?

We're probably spending 2 or 3 days exploring the city.. where could we leave our packs in the center?

Train station lockers perhaps? Are the any city bikes that everyone can use? Also a rowing boat would be nice, can you think of any places where you could rent one? (near or farther from the city)

What is the worst suburb in Oslo, I mean, lots of bars and interesting people?

After touring the city we're going to camp somewhere around Oslomarka. Where would you go? How near those places do the buses go? We don't mind some hiking, but not too much per a day. How about the water supply - any springs, public wells etc.?

And finally.. is the a website where to browse terrain maps?

Also any additional tips and weblinks you can think of will be appreciated. Hails from Helsinki! :)

Dont know much about oslo. Pro tip though. Couchsurfing.org. If not for accomodation, its a good place to meet the locals. Unless you find something here ofcourse. Oslo is a big city so it should have a living community on cs.

Place your tent in the sjølyst/bygdøy area.

You can leave your luggage in the main train station, Oslo S.

City bikes can be used and they are all around the main city, it costs 90kr to register. http://www.adshel.no/

Around sjølyst/bygdøy there should be some rowing clubs that allows you to rent boats, alternatively in nøklevann I know for sure they do.

Hey, you should check " Trafikanten " for public transportation: http://trafikanten.no/en/ <-- They have it in English :)

You should check out Holmenkollen too: http://www.holmenkollen.com/eng

We also have a nice site for people like you traveling to Oslo: http://www.visitoslo.com/en/

I think you will enjoy your stay here :) Have a nice vacation.

Oh and btw, you don´t need to excuse yourself for writing in English, it´s allowed on this forum.

+ All Norwegians learn English at school, so most of us speak fluent English :)

Visit Oslo!

Enjoy the scenery while struggeling your way trought hordes of heroin zombies as soon as you step outside the central station, but have no fear they are fairly harmless as long as you don`t stare for more than 5 seconds.

Then you can have a beautiful walk trought Oslo`s pride and joy, Karl Johans gate. here you will find dozens of shops and a nigerian whore every 10meter, and if that isn`t enough you can buy uppers, downers, hash, cocain and more from the various dealers spread around the area.

If you bring a girlfriend we will strongly advice you to not put up your tent in Sofienbergparken due to dangerous wildlife which will try to rape anything with a vagina. So keep your eyes open!

On Friday & Saturday you can take part in a very special tradition called Grøftefylla where everyone is trying to drink as much alcohol as possible before 03.00. Then the magic happens and most of the bars will close and let everyone gather in the streets for drunken games like raping, fighting, stabbing and more. We will recommend Grunerløkka to be the area with the most action.

Pro tip: Bring a bat!

Good luck!

FYI, yes he is kidding slash telling the truth :p ( The irony is strong in his post in other words )

I would recommend camping on the island "Langøyene" http://www.visitoslo.com/en/product/?TLp=182894

You can camp there for 2 days for free, and if registering with the guard on the island you may stay longer. The boat to the island is part of the public transport in Oslo and you go there with the same ticket as bus/tram/subway. If the weather is good there are long lines of people going to and from the island for sunbathing and swimming.

Some people in Oslo take this as a free "holiday trip".

not much to do. small town lol

^True.

I would much rather go to western Norway to see the fjords, but you probably have something similar in Finland, right?

Don`t get me wrong, I like Oslo. I live pretty close too, thats probably why I would rather visit other places in Norway :p
