JL Audio began in 1975 as a home speaker system manufacturer. The initial startup proved to be unsuccessful and the owners invested in a retail store called “Speaker Warehouse.” While this store primarily focused on speaker repair and the sale of speaker sets, they eventually became the main retailer for JL Audio when they began selling custom speakers during the “car audio revolution” of the early 80s. Since then, this company has come to dominate multiple car audio competitions with their exceptional tweeters, speakers and car subwoofers. They are known today for their efforts as pioneers in the car subwoofer industry, producing some of the most respected and high-powered products available.

 

Through our testing, the JL Audio subwoofer reproduced the bass notes of our songs with immaculate fidelity. We were able to hear the minute changes in the low-frequency notes. The sub reacted quickly, producing crisp, clean sounds that made every song we tested sound better. In short, this woofer’s power and beautiful sound quality pushed it above the competition. Specs/Performance

JL Audio’s 10 in car subwoofers can be ordered in both two- and four-ohm impedance configurations. The sub with lower impedance can produce a larger volume of sound with similar wattage input when compared to a woofer with higher impedance. For all practical purposes, however, there will be little discernible difference between a two-ohm and a four-ohm subwoofer to the ears of most consumers. Whichever impedance rating you decide to go with, however, be sure to match the amp accordingly. Since JL Audio’s subs are only component subwoofers, you will need to purchase an amplifier separately to power your speaker.

 

These car subwoofers reproduce sounds from 25Hz to 200Hz, measured on our matrix as the “Frequency Response.” The lowest frequency that the average human ear can perceive is 20Hz; therefore, this woofer will be pumping out sound deep enough to approach the threshold of hearing. Its efficiency, however, is only average in terms of our comparison.

 

JL’s car subwoofer is capable of handling 1000 watts of power at its peak. While you should not run your sub at this level of power continuously, it will be more than enough to add an extra level of power to your music. The RMS continuous power, or the power at which this sub can be most safely run, is 500 watts. At this level, your subwoofer will crank out the optimal level of sound balance with the greatest speaker longevity. In short, you will want to keep your sub cranking at 500W over a long period of time.

 

Sound Quality

JL Audio’s car subwoofers, as noted above, are capable of reproducing very low-frequency sounds that will broaden the scope of your listening experience and bring incredible depth to your music. While these subs do not reach the subsonic frequencies produced by some of the other products on our lineup, they will do wonders with your current system. When we listened to JL Audio’s car subwoofers, we were floored by the cleanliness and accuracy of the bass notes. In every song we tested, from hard rock and hip hop to classical, the bass was impressively clean and accurate.

 

If you’re looking for powerful, thudding bass, JL’s sub will not leave you disappointed. The power this woofer is capable of producing is incredible; when we tested this sub, the sheer volume of the sound it produced made our hair vibrate. Of course, this does not come without a warning; these car subwoofers are certainly capable of producing levels of sound that can permanently damage your hearing. The power is impressive, but dangerous. Be cautious when cranking out the bass; if you play your music too loud, you may never hear your favorite tunes again.

 

Help & Support

The customer support that JL Audio offers is impressive. A standard one-year warranty is included, protecting your subwoofer from damage incurred through standard use. There are several parameters in place to be sure that you will not damage your car subwoofer through improper use, so don’t try to pump 1000 watts into these continuously and expect to get them replaced under warranty. The warranty is not overly limiting, though; we saw similar restrictions on almost all of the subwoofers that we reviewed.
