-----------------------------

Oslo - Don Quixote, the 17th-century novel about an elderly knight who tilts at windmills, has been chosen by an international panel of authors as the best book ever written.

The survey, which was organized by the Norwegian Book Clubs, asked 100 writers from 54 countries to list their 10 favourite books.

The result was a list of 100 topped by Don Quixote, which received 50 per cent more votes than any other book. The club did not release the number of votes or ranking for the other 99 books, which were listed alphabetically by author.

Writers surveyed for the list included Salmon Rushdie, Norman Mailer, Doris Lessing, John Irving and John le Carre.
