Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King av Level-5

In Dragon Quest VIII, the Hero is controlled through a full three-dimensional environment, utilizing the left stick or D-pad on the PlayStation controller. Using the right stick, the camera can be panned a full 360 degrees around the character or in a first-person perspective. The visual controls allow players to examine people and objects more closely than the top-down perspective of the game's predecessors. With a new fully-integrated world, players no longer walk into an icon on a world map to enter towns. They can guide the Hero across vast landscapes to reach full-size towns and buildings. The game even records the distance travelled on a battle statistics page.

The battle scenes have changed dramatically from earlier games in the series. In all of the earlier games, battles are shown from a first person perspective. In this game the battles are shown in a third person perspective with all of the members of the hero's party being shown on the screen along with the enemies to be fought. Both the hero's party and the enemies have different animations for their attacks, based on whether they are attacking with a weapon or spell or other special ability.

Silent Hill 2 av Team Silent

The game follows James Sunderland, who arrives in Silent Hill after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife, Mary, who died from an illness three years ago; the letter beckons him to their "special place", although James can only assume its meaning. As James explores Silent Hill, he encounters others searching the town. Angela, whom he meets at the beginning of the game, has also just arrived to look for her mother, but on later encounters, seems to be depressed and suicidal; the slow-witted Eddie, meanwhile, seems defensive, and later tends to linger around areas with corpses, though he denies having anything to do with their deaths. Looking for their "special place," James decides to search Rosewater Park, where he meets Maria, a woman who strongly resembles Mary, but with a more provocative outfit and personality. She claims that she has never met or seen Mary and, as she is scared, James allows her to follow him. James also briefly encounters a young girl named Laura, who seems to have no knowledge of the dangers of the town, including the monsters.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty av Kojima Productions

Metal Gear Solid 2 carries the title of "Tactical Espionage Action," and most of the game involves the protagonist sneaking around avoiding being seen by the enemies.

Most fundamental are the wider range of skills offered to the player. The new first-person aiming mode allows players to target specific points in the game, greatly expanding tactical options; guards can be blinded by steam, distracted by a flying piece of fruit or hit in weak spots. Players can now walk slowly, allowing them to sneak over noisy flooring without making a sound, or hang off walkways to slip past below guards' feet. The corner-press move from the original title, which allowed players a sneak peek around the next bend is expanded to allow players to fire from cover.

In Metal Gear Solid 2, the enemy guards were given more advanced AI "to prevent an imbalance of power," and unlike the original Metal Gear Solid, work in squads. They call on their radios for a strike team upon seeing the player, then attempt to flank him and cut off his escape while avoiding the player's attacks. Often strike teams will carry body armor and riot shields, making them an even greater threat. Even if the player escapes to a hiding place, a team will sweep in to check the area.

Boss battles and set-pieces remain a case of finding a strategy that bypasses the defenses of the enemy. However, in a major break from action game standards, it is also possible to clear the entire game, including boss fights, without causing a single deliberate death, through use of tranquilizer guns, stun grenades, and melee attacks.

The Red Star av Acclaim

This game is a mix of different types of games. It has been described as a fighting, action, and shooter game rolled into one. RPG elements are also apparent as players have the option of upgrading certain attributes of a character depending on how well levels are completed.

The story is based on The Red Star graphic novel, set in a futuristic, magic-using Soviet Union, which uses floating Skyfurnaces (gigantic magical ships, reminiscent of all-metal blimps) and Warkasters (sorcerers) to conquer its enemies.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy av Naught Dog

Jak and Daxter holds similarities to platform games such as Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64 in that the objective is to gather items to progress through the levels. The player has access to super-human abilities such as double-jumping, a rapid spinning kick, and sustaining only limited damage through falling from great heights. Injuries are accounted for by way of a life meter, which decreases as the player character is hit by enemies, falls long distances, and makes contact with hazardous surfaces.

The game revolves around the collection of Power Cells, which can be earned by fighting enemies, paying for them via Precursor Orbs, accomplishing platforming challenges, and other ways. The player character "Jak" has punch and kick attacks, and can also utilize various Eco energies to complete tasks, or defeat enemies in gladiator-style arena matches.
