The Empire of Lopakus is a fledgling, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

The enormous government concentrates mainly on Social Welfare, although Education and Healthcare are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 36%, but much higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is led by the Door-to-door Insurance Sales, Book Publishing, and Gambling industries.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low. Lopakus's national animal is the amry ant, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the shunt.

The Democratic Republic of Vanarheim is a fledgling, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its burgeoning moose population. Its compassionate, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

The medium-sized, corrupt government juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 14%. A very small private sector is dominated by the Retail industry.

Crime is a problem, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Vanarheim's national animal is the moose and its currency is the euro.

The Dictatorship of The Undiscovered

Location: The Special Ones

Regional Influence: Minnow

The Dictatorship of The Undiscovered is a fledgling, safe nation, notable for its punitive income tax rates. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 5 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is effectively ruled by the Department of Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 53%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Arms Manufacturing.

Elections have been outlawed. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. The Undiscovered's national animal is the polar bear, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the daler.

Should Democracy Be Compulsory?

The Issue

In response to a slow news week, certain highbrow newspapers have stirred up the debate over voluntary vs compulsory voting.

The Debate

1. "Compulsory voting makes about as much as sense as having the death penalty for attempted suicide," says civil rights activist Jazz Li. "You can't force people to be free! You can only give them the choice. Besides, if all those derelicts who can't be bothered to get off their ass once every few years voted, who would they elect? I shudder to think."

2. "It's not contradictory at all," argues political commentator Dave Chicago. "The fact is, if not everyone votes, the outcome isn't truly representative. Some groups--like elderly gun nuts--vote more often than others. That's why we always end up with such terrible politicians."

3. "This raises an interesting issue," says Freddy Wong, your brother. "And that is: why do we need elections, anyway? Seems to me it would be much simpler if you just decided what was right, and did it. Wouldn't that save everyone a lot of time?"
