The road from St Mary’s to Anfield may be well worn by former Saints players, but it’s not the Premier League’s busiest transfer route.

And remarkably, it isn’t even Liverpool’s.

We have taken a look at transfermarkt.co.uk’s records of every permanent transfer made involving a current Premier League side since the formation of the division in 1992.

Only seven players have moved between the Reds and Southampton during that time, with six leaving the south coast for Merseyside and one going in the opposite direction.

That is comfortably beaten by the dealings done between Liverpool and West Ham, with 16 moves to date. Only four of those went to Anfield - including Yossi Benayoun and Javier Mascherano - while 12 made their way to Upton Park.

Among the dozen who headed to Upton Park were Rigobert Song, Craig Bellamy, Titi Camara, Joe Cole and Andy Carroll.

Other top relationships at Anfield include those with Sunderland (12 transfers), Spurs (11), Aston Villa (11) and Real Madrid (8)

In terms of the entire Premier League, the Liverpool-West Ham partnership comes out second behind Tottenham and Portsmouth.

As many as 17 permanent transfers have been made between the two clubs during the Premier League era.

Spurs have signed five players from Portsmouth on a permanent basis while Pompey have picked up 12 from Tottenham.

Watford and Udinese have also bought and sold 16 players to one another. The balance is more in Watford’s favour though having signed 14 players from the Italian club. That’s more than any current Premier League side has picked up from a single club. It’s worth remembering though that both sides are owned by the Pozzo family.

Leicester (five) and Leeds (10) have bought and sold 15 players to one another, while Bournemouth and West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth, and West Ham and QPR have all exchanged 14 player

Tja. Lykke til.
