MST Skrevet 3. juni 2010 Del Skrevet 3. juni 2010 Hei. Night Without End Night Without End is written by Alistair Maclean who was a Scottish novelist that wrote successful thrillers or adventure stories and he is provably most known for The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Date, , they have both been made into successful films. The book is a Thriller and Adventure book. The story is related in first person by its main character, Peter Mason. Peter Mason is working as a doctor and the person in charge for the scientific station. He manages the rescue team and organizes the travel through the Polar ice cap to the coast to bring people to safety. Characters Another character in the story is Jackstraw, he is a very skilled man with guns and he knows all about how to survive on the Greenland ice cap, and the radio operator Joseph London. Peter Mason, Jackstraw and Joseph London configure a team where everyone can rely on each other, because in such extreme conditions their survival depends on good team work. Setting Night Without End takes place on the Polar ice cap and the weather is really cold. The setting makes the story exiting because the author describes the ice-cap as dark and the cold weather is making you kind of fear that they all will die. And it might be this fear that makes this story such exiting. The way Alistair Maclean describes the surroundings of this place impressed me. His ability to make the reader drawn into the text is amazing and you can almost feel the cold weather go slowly into you. Theme The theme of the story has to be survival and I don’t really know if the author are trying to tell anything else than what’s told in the story, but he has the ability to make you think of who that actually killed the pilots of the airplane and how it happen. Plot The story starts kind of explosively with an airplane crash at the Polar ice cap. Jackstraw who is a very skilled man with guns that knows all about how to survive on the Polar ice cap goes out to see if there are any survivor of this crash. Since they are in the polar region of Greenland, the conditionsare extremely harsh, and there is no reason for a civil airliner to be flying anywhere near here. This makes the story kind of mysterious, because you now wonder why this airplane actually flies over such a place like this. However the climate and lack of provisions aren’t the only things that they have to worry about – later on it becomes clear to Mason and Jackstraw that there are murderers among the survivors. After an “accident” with their only radio – their only way of escaping from this place now is by using a rickety old Citroen tractor that is far from reliable. More concerns pops up with unexplained loss of resources and mysterious background stories about the survivors and if this is not enough the weather is against them and the chances of any of them surviving or any good explanations of why the plane crashes becomes even bleaker. Bleak- Guffen My thoughts Bleak! That is a good way to describe this story. Written in the first person form, MacLean’s description of the frighten environment is quite scary – seriously, you shouldn’t read this story if you’re already feeling a bit cold, this story will make you absolutely freezing and shaky! You might look outside to make sure that you’re not on the Polar ice cap after reading this! The atmosphere and tension is well built up. With a mysterious and ignorant story put together with effective and good descriptions I think the author has made a good job writing this story. The characters are pretty well drawn, although the main character was perhaps a little too self-recriminating, though this was understandable considering the situation and the results of his errors at times. There interaction between the characters was always believable, and there were often little surprises in the revelations that came up. There are a lot of surprises during the story and I certainly don’t think anyone reading this will ever get bored, regardless of their genre preference. I think that MacLean has a good knowledge about the climate in this part of the world and the problems it brings, as well as some medical knowledge that adds authority to the writing. Conclusion Overall Night Without End is a very effective and atmospheric thriller, with an ending that is kind of expected, but also unexpected at the same time. The author has a great ability to give you a sense of the place where the book is set. I could easily recommend this book to anybody who likes thrillers and adventure story. This book may fit people between 15 and 30 years, because for anybody who is under this age, the story might be a little hard to understand and I don’t think murder stories should be read by kids.
