First and foremost, Lockerz is out to make money. Like any other business. They're not "giving us free stuff", and they're certainly running the site as a kindness to the user. Go ahead and complain if you feel screwed that you've been generating traffic for them, signed up a few of your friends, and aren't able to redeem any "ptz", because the administrators of the website have wasted your time and energy, and have failed to live up to their end of the deal.

Lockers is a fairly new website, with obvious ambitions to achieve great success and attracting many daily users. Lockerz is invite only, with users being rewarded for inviting twenty people. This is brilliant, because it gives Lockerz the appearance of being "exclusive", while remaining completely self-advertising. It is already the 1,200th most visited site in the US, and as high as 144th most visited in other countries, in just its first six months. It's apparent that the exclusive nature of the website and the promise of free electronics have caught the attention of many.

Where does Lockerz get its money from? Some people think that they sell the answers to the dailies to market research companies or something along those lines. Maybe, maybe some of them, or perhaps once the site is out of beta that's their intention. Most likely, their major source of revenue will be selling ad space when the site goes public. What better way to ensure they get paid handsomely for that ad space than having a dedicated userbase of millions that check the site daily before its even out of beta?

There is, of course, the problem of startup. At this point, hypothetically anyway, they're just giving prizes away, at relatively low point costs. Giving away 5 PSPs will generate them as much traffic as giving away 5000 PSPs, because none of the users know how many they have in stock. All we know is when the products will go live, at which point we swarm them with traffic en masse. Why would they give away more than a little of each prize? To their end, it is cheaper and just as effective to offer few prizes.

Also noteworthy is the presence of Kathy Savitt, former Amazon executive. This lends considerable and much-needed credibility to Lockerz. Regardless, the staff of Lockerz is very secretive (who else noticed the mass-deletion of their wall today?). Many people likely had the first thought of: "If something seems too good to be true, it's probably too good to be true" upon encountering Lockerz, and I think that may be the case. I do believe products are, have been and will be sent out, but in very limited supplies and largely as a means of exploiting their uninformed userbase for maximum advertisement revenue.
