steve10001 Skrevet 27. juli 2009 Del Skrevet 27. juli 2009 (endret) Hi all, Firstly, sorry about writing in english, my norwegian is nowhere near good enough to explain my problem.. Anyways, here`s the deal, we are making modiifications to our house, and unfortunately removed an internet socket from the wall - in doing so, we completely broke our internet connection. What i have now are a bunch of different coloured wires and a box ( see pictures below There were two sets of wires going into this box, one going in, and the other going out (to the plug we use upstairs i think). The question is, which wires go where? all i can see are the numbers 1 to 8 in the box (see the image of the stupid box above)as you can see, i tried joining the wires together, but that didnt work. in case the image isnt clear enough, these are the wire colours i have: green blue orange brown blue/white striped orange/white striped brown/white striped green/white striped. i think thats it anyway. Well, if anyone can help me solve this problem, i would be gratefull, and in return they will receive a big mac menu with extra fries and one of those mcdonalds hats with the elastic string. seriously! cheers steve Endret 27. juli 2009 av steve10001 Lenke til kommentar

steve10001 Skrevet 27. juli 2009 Forfatter Del Skrevet 27. juli 2009 wow, quick reply, liked the "let me google that for you" touch. I would have but as i know nothing about these things, i wasnt sure what exactly to search for. Well anyway, i`ll give that a shot and if its a winner i`ll get that big mac menu off to you :-) Lenke til kommentar

Lars Dongeri Oppholdsnes Skrevet 27. juli 2009 Del Skrevet 27. juli 2009 (endret) If you have a box upstairs, it would be a good idea to check the color coding of the cable in that very box. There are several ways to connect these and I would not assume anything until actually observed The main thing to keep in mind is that the Cat5e cable you probably are using, consists of 4 pairs. In order to transfer data it is very important to use these pairs as they are balanced. (actually what colored pair you use is not important, but its good to keep a standard for future additions) Pair 1: 1,2 Orange/W Orange Pair 2: 3,6 Green/W Green Pair 3: 4,5 Blue/W Blue Pair 4: 7,8 Brown/W Brown The reason for the weird scheme with pair 2 is telephony can use the center pins of the RJ-45 while data is transferred on pin 123&6. If Gigabit is used it needs all 4 pairs, while 100Mbit uses only pair 1 & pair 2. Endret 27. juli 2009 av la7dfa.com Lenke til kommentar

steve10001 Skrevet 28. juli 2009 Forfatter Del Skrevet 28. juli 2009 (endret) hi again, I tried different variations but then found that the plug upstairs is differently wired, see picture below: (edit) forgot to mention, we dont use a telephone landline in the house if that matters) thanx for the help so far:-) Endret 28. juli 2009 av steve10001 Lenke til kommentar
Lars Dongeri Oppholdsnes Skrevet 29. juli 2009 Del Skrevet 29. juli 2009 The box upstairs is connected correct. Just notice it starts with conductor 4 & 5. The color coding downstairs should follow the same scheme with colors and numbers but 4 & 5 are in the middle of the row and not in the beginning. The reason for the "weird" 45123678 upstairs is "telephony is easier to connect" since it uses the first pair there... Just old fashioned way to do it. Downstairs you should start with the green pair, not the blue since that goes to 4 & 5 in the middle. Pair 1: 1,2 Green/White, Green Pair 2: 3,6 Orange/W, Orange Pair 3: 4,5 Blue/W, Blue Pair 4: 7,8 Brown/W, Brown Lenke til kommentar
steve10001 Skrevet 29. juli 2009 Forfatter Del Skrevet 29. juli 2009 (endret) well 50% good :-), i wired up the downstairs as you said (la7dfa.com)and managed to get the router to get a stable connection from the downstairs plug, but i still get a flashing light upstairs - no connection. i noticed that the plug upstairs has the wires in reverse - see the bottom image in my last post Downstairs Pair 1: 1,2 Green/White, Green Upstairs Pair 1: 1,2 White, green/green does this matter? p.s, which of the wires actually deliver the broadband? i only ask because my freind uses only 2 wires. cheers steve Endret 29. juli 2009 av steve10001 Lenke til kommentar
Lars Dongeri Oppholdsnes Skrevet 29. juli 2009 Del Skrevet 29. juli 2009 (endret) Just use the same color code on the same number. Pin 1 should be green/white, while pin 2 should be solid green both upstairs and downstairs. 100Mbit connection uses 1+2 and 3+6, IE the green and orange wires. Gigabit uses all 4 pairs. ADSL_modem or telephone uses 4+5. Endret 29. juli 2009 av la7dfa.com Lenke til kommentar

steve10001 Skrevet 16. august 2009 Forfatter Del Skrevet 16. august 2009 hiya all! here`s the update (just got back from my holiday) well the wiring of this plug wasnt as straightforward as i though, it turns out the wiring was as la7dfa.com said in the previous reply, but with one major difference, the blue and blue/white wires were swapped from position 4&5 to position 1&2. GOING INTO THE BOX: Pair 1: 1,2 Green/White, Green Pair 2: 3,6 Orange/W, Orange Pair 3: 4,5 Blue/W, Blue Pair 4: 7,8 Brown/W, Brown GOING OUT OF THE BOX TO UPSTAIRS: Pair 1: 1,2 Blue/W, Blue took me ages to figure tha out. anyway, thanks again for all your help, and hopefully this thread may help someone else out in the future. cheers Steve Lenke til kommentar
Lars Dongeri Oppholdsnes Skrevet 16. august 2009 Del Skrevet 16. august 2009 Some of these boxes actually starts with 45... and then proceeds with 123... This is due to telephone using 4&5. They should normally be marked with 4&5 and blue color tho... Lenke til kommentar
