Bankraner anklaget for ran av 26 millioner pund går fri etter at retten kollapset.

Bank worker accused of £26million 'IRA' robbery walks free after trial collapses

By David Williams

Last updated at 9:35 PM on 09th October 2008

Comments (4) Add to My Stories The only man accused of Britain's biggest bank robbery walked free from court yesterday after the collapse of his trial.

Bank official Chris Ward, 26, was said to have provided inside information to the gang which escaped with £26.5million in December 2004.

But in dramatic scenes in Belfast Crown Court, prosecutors announced they would offer no further evidence.

article-0-02F1100300000578-370_468x363.jpg

Free: Chris Ward was found not guilty of three charges in Britain's biggest bank robbery

Police blamed the Northern Bank robbery on the Provisional IRA and yesterday's collapse means whoever carried out the heist has, in the words of one bank official, 'got clean away with it'.

Mr Ward was kept under surveillance and arrested almost a year after the raid. He may take legal action against the police.

His solicitor, Niall Murphy, said: 'The whole experience for himself and his family, who were victims of kidnapping, false imprisonment and robbery, was truly devastating.

'This has been compounded by his arrest and being put on trial for a crime he did not commit.'

It was on Sunday December 19, 2004, that three masked men arrived at the Ward family home in Poleglass, West Belfast.

Two men held the family hostage while Mr Ward was driven to the home of his supervisor Kevin McMullan, who was already being held.

Men posing as police officers had tied up Mr McMullan and his wife Kyran at gunpoint. She was taken away and held blindfold for more than 24 hours.

On the Monday morning, the two men were told by their captors to go to work and carry out their normal duties.

Acting on instructions, Mr Ward left the bank carrying a holdall containing about £1million and handed it to a man on the street, in what police believed was a dummy run.

Money was then loaded into crates and collected by a van in two loads from the bank's loading bay.

Explaining the decision not to present more evidence, prosecution counsel Gordon Kerr QC said the case had been based on circumstantial evidence which had been brought into question.

Ingen Blue-Ray til Xbox 360

MS: Xbox will not go Blu

no_bluray_on_xbox.jpg

Microsoft has once again poured cold water over the latest rumour that it’ll launch a Blu-ray Disc drive add-on for the Xbox 360.

A blogger going by the name of “Major Nelson” has posted an audio interview online with Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s Group Product Manager for the Xbox 360. In the interview, which took place at the Tokyo Game Show this week, Greenberg said: “We have no plans to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.”

Earlier this week, it was rumoured that a joint venture between Samsung and Toshiba had been tasked with making the add-on drives for the console, which would be sold for between $100 and $150 (£51-87/€73-110).

Greenberg also went on to disparage Blu-ray as a format and said that “if you look at retail sales and availability, there's not a lot there, and what is there is at a premium.

"It's pretty clear it's not the next DVD,” he said.

Blu-ray also took a beating from Blockbuster Video last month, when the firm's CFO, Thomas Casey, hinted that wholesale and retail prices of Blu-ray films has slowed consumer adoption.

However, Greenberg went on to say: “We also believe that the future's digital, and that's why we've invested in a massive library of entertainment content.”

His comments echoed a statement released by Microsoft back in May in which it stated that is has “no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360” because “games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles”.

Greenberg also went on to disparage Blu-ray as a format and said that “if you look at retail sales and availability, there's not a lot there, and what is there is at a premium.

"It's pretty clear it's not the next DVD,” he said.

Youtube starter med å streame TV show fra CBS : Star Trek, The Young & The Restless, og Beverley Hills 90210

YouTube Begins Streaming Full-Length Shows from CBS

youtubenew.PNG

In another move towards earning more revenue from its huge audience, YouTube has started streaming full-length TV shows that will include advertising. The content, which includes Star Trek, The Young & The Restless, and Beverley Hills 90210 comes through a deal with CBS. Advertising will include familiar formats like pre, mid, and post-roll.

For YouTube, the deal certainly marks further indication that the company is not having a great deal of success in monetizing the user-generated video that dominates the site. While the current lineup of content from CBS may not be especially impressive – no offense Y&R fans – it’s likely just the first of many deals that YouTube will make to bring more professionally produced content to its site that can be more easily monetized.

For CBS, the deal might be seen as yet another sign of a lack of confidence in Joost, the professional video content site where CBS is an investor. Meanwhile, CBS already offers full-length versions of many of its popular shows like CSI on its own website. Ultimately, it would look like YouTube is simply being viewed as another place to distribute content for the media company. CBS also recently did a deal with Slide to distribute video content through Facebook applications.

Microsoft går "Open Source" i ett prosjekt

Microsoft's experiment in multi-touch computing is open source

InfoWorld was the first to report that Microsoft has released a new Touchless SDK to help developers kick the tires on multi-touch technology.

But it was TechCrunch that pointed to perhaps a more significant aspect of the release: it's open source.

Released under the Microsoft Public License, the Touchless project is a good example of Microsoft doing its own experimentation around open source. The Touchless SDK isn't a revenue-bearing product, though it could be a way to create products that drive Microsoft revenue, especially given that the SDK only works on Windows today, which could lead to Touchless-created products running on Windows, as well.

Regardless, it's good to see Microsoft doing more of its investigations of new markets using open source. Microsoft was never going to open source cash cows like Windows and Office. But perhaps as it seeks to create new markets or disrupt old markets in which it has yet to hold a dominant share, open source will factor more fundamentally into its plans.

A Virgins Plea

Help me finally get laid!

So, here's the story - I'm 25, and to this date, have never been laid. Yes, it's sad, but it's true. The whole story, however, is far more interesting than just the lack of sex.

When I was 21, I was engaged to be married to a woman I thought I would be with for the rest of my life, and the two of us had chosen to wait until marriage to have sex so we could share something special with each other. But when I was 22, just six months before our wedding, I discovered that she had been cheating on me and sleeping with another man. Needless to say, I was crushed. For the last 3 years I haven't really been able to bring myself to start dating again as the pain of that betrayal still runs deep inside of me. But as a man, the overwhelming urge to have sex is just starting to get to be too much for me to handle, and so I made a bet with one of my very hot (but also very platonic) female friends - if I can get 5 million visitors to this website in 30 days, she has agreed to help me with my "problem". If I can't get to five million in 30 days, I have to be her personal servant for a week, doing anything she asks me to do.

So this site is my attempt to get to 5 million hits in 30 days. The site started on Oct 1st, 2008, so I have 19 days left to make the bet, and so far, the total number of visitors is: 955160

Ny vitenskapelig metode skal stoppe mordere og terrorister

'Brain fingerprinting' could be breakthrough in law enforcement

081010_Brain_fingerprinting.jpg

SEATTLE -- Science is becoming a more important part of catching a killer or terrorist and keeping the innocent out of jail.

A Seattle neuroscientist is leading the way with technology based on a simple fact: your brain can't lie.

An odd looking headband, flashing words on a computer screen, and a couple clicks of a mouse could be the secret to putting a murderer behind bars.

"It's a game changer in the field of global security," said Dr. Larry Farwell, Chairman of Brain Fingerprinting Labs who developed "brain fingerprinting" - a lie detector test for the 21st century.

While polygraph tests rely on emotional responses, brain fingerprinting records how your brain reacts to words and images related to a crime -- ones only the killer would recognize.

"If the person was there, they get 'ah ha!' response in the brain waves," he said. "The brain says 'Ah ha!' "

And that "ah ha" moment can't be covered up.

"This is an involuntary response that happens very quickly; it's not something you can control," he said.

Dr. Farwell has worked with the CIA, FBI and law enforcement agencies around the country. His cases include an innocent Iowa man finally freed after 23 years, and a serial killer in Missouri who eventually confessed.

It's technology Farwell says is fool proof. And unlike polygraphs, these can be admitted in court.

There's still resistance from some law enforcement agencies.

"It took some time, it always takes time," Farwell said. "It took time for fingerprints, for DNA and now for brain fingerprinting."

But Dr. Farwell says his guarantee will help more people accept it.

"I can't beat it, and I invented it."

He has even offered $100,000 to anyone who can fool the system, and so far nobody has.

Hindu Threat to Christians: Convert or Flee

13india01-600.jpg

A Christian in her burned home in the Indian state of Orissa. Villagers blamed Hindu militants.

BOREPANGA, India — The family of Solomon Digal was summoned by neighbors to what serves as a public square in front of the village tea shop.

They were ordered to get on their knees and bow before the portrait of a Hindu preacher. They were told to turn over their Bibles, hymnals and the two brightly colored calendar images of Christ that hung on their wall. Then, Mr. Digal, 45, a Christian since childhood, was forced to watch his Hindu neighbors set the items on fire.

“ ‘Embrace Hinduism, and your house will not be demolished,’ ” Mr. Digal recalled being told on that Wednesday afternoon in September. “ ‘Otherwise, you will be killed, or you will be thrown out of the village.’ ”

India, the world’s most populous democracy and officially a secular nation, is today haunted by a stark assault on one of its fundamental freedoms. Here in eastern Orissa State, riven by six weeks of religious clashes, Christian families like the Digals say they are being forced to abandon their faith in exchange for their safety.

The forced conversions come amid widening attacks on Christians here and in at least five other states across the country, as India prepares for national elections next spring.

The clash of faiths has cut a wide swath of panic and destruction through these once quiet hamlets fed by paddy fields and jackfruit trees. Here in Kandhamal, the district that has seen the greatest violence, more than 30 people have been killed, 3,000 homes burned and over 130 churches destroyed, including the tin-roofed Baptist prayer hall where the Digals worshiped. Today it is a heap of rubble on an empty field, where cows blithely graze.

Across this ghastly terrain lie the singed remains of mud-and-thatch homes. Christian-owned businesses have been systematically attacked. Orange flags (orange is the sacred color of Hinduism) flutter triumphantly above the rooftops of houses and storefronts.

India is no stranger to religious violence between Christians, who make up about 2 percent of the population, and India’s Hindu-majority of 1.1 billion people. But this most recent spasm is the most intense in years.

It was set off, people here say, by the killing on Aug. 23 of a charismatic Hindu preacher known as Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, who for 40 years had rallied the area’s people to choose Hinduism over Christianity.

The police have blamed Maoist guerrillas for the swami’s killing. But Hindu radicals continue to hold Christians responsible.

In recent weeks, they have plastered these villages with gruesome posters of the swami’s hacked corpse. “Who killed him?” the posters ask. “What is the solution?”

Behind the clashes are long-simmering tensions between equally impoverished groups: the Panas and Kandhas. Both original inhabitants of the land, the two groups for ages worshiped the same gods. Over the past several decades, the Panas for the most part became Christian, as Roman Catholic and Baptist missionaries arrived here more than 60 years ago, followed more recently by Pentecostals, who have proselytized more aggressively.

Meanwhile, the Kandhas, in part through the teachings of Swami Laxmanananda, embraced Hinduism. The men tied the sacred Hindu white thread around their torsos; their wives daubed their foreheads with bright red vermilion. Temples sprouted.

Hate has been fed by economic tensions as well, as the government has categorized each group differently and given them different privileges.

The Kandhas accused the Panas of cheating to obtain coveted quotas for government jobs. The Christian Panas, in turn, say their neighbors have become resentful as they have educated themselves and prospered.

Their grievances have erupted in sporadic clashes over the past 15 years, but they have exploded with a fury since the killing of Swami Laxmanananda.

Two nights after his death, a Hindu mob in the village of Nuagaon dragged a Catholic priest and a nun from their residence, tore off much of their clothing and paraded them through the streets.

Windows 7 blir det navnet

Introducing Windows 7

Hi there, Mike Nash here.

For me, one of the most exciting times in the release of a new product is right before we show it to the world for the first time. And that time is right now.

In a few weeks we are going to be talking about the details of this release at the PDC and at WinHEC. We will be sharing a pre-beta "developer only release" with attendees of both shows and giving them the first broad in-depth look at what we've been up to. I can't wait for them to see it.

And, as you probably know, since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7."

While I know there have been a few cases at Microsoft when the codename of a product was used for the final release, I am pretty sure that this is a first for Windows. You might wonder about the decision.

The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.

Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense.

We are very excited about the opportunity to tell you more about Windows 7 in the coming weeks, and show you how we have continued to build on investments begun in Windows Vista to deliver on the next release of the Windows operating system.

I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming weeks and months.

--Mike

Joost lanserer en Flash basert webside. Joost er tidligere basert på nedlastet programvare.

Joost Launches Their Website Early; Will It Be Enough?

Joost, earlier today, debuted their Flash, web-only attempt this morning. This comes hot on the tails of the news that CBS, an investor in Joost, will begin releasing full length shows on the Google-owned video sharing network. The launch comes five days ahead of schedule, according to Gubatron this morning.

Previous to the launch, Joost was only accessible by way of a downloadable client that functioned a little like a PC based PVR, allowing mainstream content to be viewable on-demand. The project was almost universally panned by reviewers when it was announced, but truth be told, I always thought it was a good idea in theory, but lacked a great deal in its execution.

As it stands now, Joost is set to blend in with all the other competition on the web, competition that’s by no means thin and weak. As I’ve said for years, the problem with digital video is that the veg-factor just isn’t there in most systems, and for those systems where it does exist, it’s rather shoe-horned and antithetical to the rest of the user experience.

joost1.jpg

I explained the veg-factor a while back in a discussion about the state of modern DVRs:

To illustrate the veg-factor, think about the type of media consumption you do in the morning, while you’re getting the kids ready for school, or fixing breakfast in the morning while you’re getting ready for work. Morning show format news-ish programs are designed for this low-engagement, veg-factor consumption. They’re, in large part, designed to be background noise that delivers some entertainment and utility to your morning.

Likewise, in the evening, you come home from work, you switch on the TV and catch the local news or a Seinfeld re-run, and leave the TV on through Wheel of Fortune or whatever reality program du jour is on this season. Most people won’t even touch the remote until prime-time starts. That’s the veg-factor in action.

This is something Joost could have tackled, and in so doing made big inroads on tackling the living room Internet video viewing experience. Unfortunately, they created a piece of software that required far too much processing power for the average person to afford, at least in terms of what they’re willing to spend on their home entertainment unit.

smashed-tv.jpg

At this point, with Joost fading into the scenery in terms of delivery method, their content not looking too much different from their neighbors at Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, it doesn’t look like they’ll be doing much to pull themselves into any sort of a leadership position.

The only thing that could save them at this point would be if they continue to pull in unique and noteworthy content producers from both the mainstream and the Internet. They look like they’ve been on this track recently, as just a few weeks ago they announced a content partnership with podcast giant Wizzard. They’ll need to be looking for many more partnerships like this to continue to compete with the likes of YouTube and Hulu.

Prada II Touchscreen Phone Announced

If you’re the kind of person who think choosing the right handbag/coat combo is a life or death decision, the latest Prada2 Phone by LG may well start tempting your overstocked pockets.

Scheduled for release “before the end of the year,” the slim handset looks very similar to the original Prada touchscreen phone that pre-dated the iPhone, except they’ve wedged in an “ultra-thin” keyboard which slides from under the handset.

prada-2-handset-lg1.jpg

Apparently, it appears “serenely” and then slides “invisibly, effortlessly away” - a feat which apparently makes it, a “modern icon of mobile style and design with an extra competitive edge.” Ya rly.

The first Prada phone managed to shift over a million units, but these weren’t sold to ordinary punters, no sir! According to the Prada, they were purely sold to “design-conscious users.”

Despite all the PR blubber, the phone actually comes with a pretty nifty feature set, packing 3G video calling, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, full HTML browser, Wi-Fi and TV-out with an FM radio onboard. The pixel count is quite generous in the camera department too, with the 5MP snapper sporting a Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens.

The new Prada mobile will be available with a starting price of 600 Euros in Italy, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Netherlands in the 4Q of 2008. No doubt network deal discounts will be available.

prada-2-handset-lg.jpg

What we think:

Given the choice, we’d be more interested in slipping a HTC Touch (HD) Pro, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 or - our current favourite - a T-Mobile G1 phone into our pockets, but we can see Prada’s little fella attracting a loving audience amongst the fashionistas.

Despite our inbuilt repulsion to the entire ‘luxury brand’ concept (we’d immediately scratch off the Prada name if we were given the phone!), this looks to be a well specified, compact and stylish handset.

Nettsiden DarMarket var FBI felle

Cybercrime Supersite 'DarkMarket' Was FBI Sting, Documents Confirm

ncfta_outside_660x.jpg

While criminals thought it was based in Eastern Europe, the internet's top English-speaking cybercrime forum was secretly run by the FBI from this building on the banks of the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh.

Photo: John Monroe Butler/ Wired.com

DarkMarket.ws, an online watering hole for thousands of identify thieves, hackers and credit card swindlers, has been secretly run by an FBI cybercrime agent for the last two years, until its voluntary shutdown earlier this month, according to documents unearthed by a German radio network.

Reports from the German national police obtained by the Südwestrundfunk, Southwest Germany public radio, blow the lid off the long running sting by revealing its role in nabbing a German credit card forger active on DarkMarket. The FBI agent is identified in the documents as J. Keith Mularski, a senior cybercrime agent based at the National Cyber Forensics Training Alliance in Pittsburgh, who ran the site under the hacker handle Master Splynter.

The NCFTA is a non-profit information sharing alliance funded by financial firms, internet companies and the federal government. It's also home to a seven-agent FBI headquarters unit called the Cyber Initiative and Resource Fusion Unit, which evidently ran the DarkMarket sting.

The FBI didn't return a phone call Monday.

Like earlier crime sites, DarkMarket allowed buyers and sellers of stolen identities and credit card data to meet and do business in an entrepreneurial, peer-reviewed environment. Products for sale ran the gamut from specialized hardware, to electronic banking logins collected from phishing attacks, stolen personal data needed to assume a consumer's identity ("full infos") and credit card magstripe swipes ("dumps), which are used to produce counterfeit cards. Vendors were encouraged to submit their goods for review before offering them for sale.

ncfta_inside_660x.jpg

Inside the National Cyber Forensics Training Alliance, FBI agents work with graduate students and industry representatives to track computer crime.

Photo: John Monroe Butler/ Wired.com

The unearthed documents, seen by Threat Level, show the FBI sting had begun by November, 2006. An FBI memo sent to the German national police regarding a forum member in that country boasts, "Currently, the FBI has been successful in penetrating the inner 'family' of the carding forum, DarkMarket." A March 2007 e-mail from Mularski's FBI address to his German counterpart puts it bluntly. "Master Splynter is me."

The documents indicate the FBI used DarkMarket to build "intelligence briefs" on its members, complete with their internet IP addresses and details of their activities on the site. In at least some cases, the bureau matched the information with transaction records provided by the electronic currency service E-Gold.

Last month, Master Splyntr -- now identified as Mularski -- announced he was shuttering the site as of October 4th, citing unwanted attention garnered by a fellow administrator, known as Cha0. From his home in Turkey, Cha0 had aggressively marketed a high-quality ATM skimmer and PIN pad that fraudsters could covertly affix to certain models of cash machines, capturing consumers account numbers and secret codes. But he began drawing heat this year after reportedly kidnapping and torturing a police informant. He was arrested in Turkey last month, where police identified him as one Cagatay Evyapan.

That's why it was time to close DarkMarket, Master Splynter explained, in a message that now rings with irony.

"It is apparent that this forum … is attracting too much attention from a lot of the world services (agents of FBI, SS, and Interpol). I guess it was only time before this would happen. It is very unfortunate that we have come to this situation, because ... we have established DM as the premier English speaking forum for conducting business. Such is life. When you are on top, people try to bring you down."

darkmarket.jpg

The German report confirm rumors that have swirled around DarkMarket since late 2006, when uber-hacker Max Ray Butler cracked the site's server and announced to the underground that he'd caught Master Splynter logging in from the NCFTA's office on the banks of the Monongahela River. Butler ran a site of his own, and the warning was generally dismissed as inter-forum rivalry, even when Butler was arrested in San Francisco last year on credit card fraud charges, and shipped to Pittsburgh for prosecution.

Until this afternoon, SpamHaus listed Master Splynter as an Eastern European spammer named Pavel Kaminski, who was active as recently as 2005. It's possible the FBI took over the handle sometime thereafter. In 2004, the Secret Service ran a similar scheme on the crime board ShadowCrew, but that agency used an informant, who went on to commit more crimes -- a risk not likely present with agent Mularski.

Lord Cyric, another former DarkMarket administrator, says Master Splynter was invited onto DarkMarket as an admin about two years ago, and was still known as a spammer. Based in Canada, Lord Cyric has sold fake IDs and checks in the underground, but he's convinced he's out of reach of any sting operation.

"Worry? Me? Nah," he wrote in an IM interview. "It's a long, slow hard process for them to interest Canadian [law enforcement] to go after someone who doesn't touch drugs nor deals with skimmers. ... It's all about U.S. busts, unless there's a big drug deal and DEA gets involved."

Threat Level admires Lord Cyric's bluster, but thinks his days in the underground are numbered. The FBI almost certainly closed DarkMarket in preparation for a global wave of arrests that will unfold in the next month or so. The site was likely shuttered to avoid an Agatha Christie scenario in which a diminishing pool of cybercrooks are free to speculate about why they're disappearing one-by-one like the hapless dinner guests in Ten Little Indians.

Kudos to Südwestrundfunk reporter Kai Laufen, who discovered the operation. I'm sending him the "I Spotted the Fed" tee-shirt I took home from DefCon 7.
