We take a look at some of the classic encounters between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Sunday's Capital One Cup Final.

League Cup history

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have locked horns on seven occasions in the League Cup, and the Blues boast three wins to Spurs’ two.

Chelsea posted wins over two legs in 1972 and 1991, with the former seeing them through to the Final of the competition, and the latter into the Semi-Finals.

The last two League Cup meetings have seen Spurs collect their two victories, and they’ve been rather significant.

The first came in a Semi-Final back in 2002, when they thumped their London rivals 5-1 at White Hart Lane. Steffen Iversen, Tim Sherwood, Teddy Sheringham, Simon Davies and Sergei Rebrov all netted as Mikael Forssell grabbed a late consolation for Chelsea, and Mario Melchiot saw red.

The other Spurs triumph was at Wembley Stadium in 2008, when a Jonathan Woodgate extra-time winner was enough to see Tottenham to their fourth League Cup title in a 2-1 win.

First meeting

The first ever clash between Chelsea and Tottenham came back in December 1909, and it was the Blues who registered a 2-1 victory. Spurs, though, would get the better of them in the reverse fixture that season, and they also knocked them out of the FA Cup second round, winning 1-0.

Last time out

Fast forward just over 115 years, and the bragging rights remain with Tottenham going into Sunday's Capital One Cup Final following their 5-3 win over Chelsea in North London in January.

That victory avenged a 3-0 scoreline from a month earlier, with a Harry Kane brace and strikes from Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli sealing a comprehensive New Year's Day win.

Goals, goals, goals

Both teams have recorded overwhelming wins against each other in their history, and Chelsea’s most convincing came in 1997 when they thumped Spurs 6-1 at the Lane.

Tore-Andre Flo grabbed a hat-trick and Roberto Di Matteo, Dan Petrescu and Mark Nicholls also got in on the act.

Tottenham hit five without reply past Chelsea in October 1920 for their biggest triumph over the Blues.

Overall

The overall head-to-head record between Chelsea and Tottenham stands at 152 matches played, 64 Chelsea wins, 50 Tottenham wins, and 38 draws.

With regards to Sunday’s two managers, Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino, there is a much larger difference in success when they have come up against each other.

Mourinho has only ever lost once to Pochettino, in that 5-3 thriller in January, and he has got the better of his Spurs counterpart in their seven other showdowns - four as Real Madrid coach, against Pochettino's Espanyol, and twice last season as Chelsea did the double over Southampton, who the Argentine managed to an eighth-placed Premier League finish before making the switch to White Hart Lane.
