Drivers may get insurance breaks for playing computer games

 

NEW YORK (AP) -- Could playing computer games enhance mental agility enough to turn people over 50 into better drivers? Allstate Corp. wants to find out, and if the answer is yes, it might offer insurance discounts to people who play the games.

 

Under a new pilot program called InSight, Allstate will offer specialized computer games to 100,000 customers in Pennsylvania aged 50 to 75. The games' developer, San Francisco-based Posit Science, will track the total number of hours these drivers play.

 

Then the group's accident rates will be compared to a control group of people who do not play the games.

 

The games are not all specific to driving. They're designed to reverse age-related cognitive decline and improve visual alertness.

 

For example, a game called "Jewel Diver" has players keep track of underwater jewels that pop up on the screen for a moment before they are hidden under fish swimming around. When the fish stop moving, players click on the fish hiding the jewel. It's like Three Card Monte but without the cheating. Over time, the game gets more complicated as more fish appear on the screen.

 

Allstate recommends that drivers complete at least 10 hours of training. It's being given as a free option to the 100,000 Pennsylvania drivers, and Allstate plans to decide next year whether to roll it out in other states.

 

Tom Warden, an assistant vice president at Allstate, said the company chose Posit's technology because it is based on nine years of research into how older drivers' brain fitness might be improved.

 

While people their 50s and 60s have the lowest accident rates of all drivers, at some point in the mid-60s this rate starts to climb again, Warden said. He hopes the brain fitness software can show "significant benefits here -- beyond dollars and cents."

“Saw” Director Recruits ‘Army’ to Post Fake Torrents

Are you the director of some high profile movies, feel you have a piracy problem but no longer do business with MediaDefender? Do you want to fail, badly? Then maybe you should follow the lead of Darren Bousman, director of the Saw movie sequels - and ask members of the public to upload fakes files on BitTorrent sites.

 

Darren Bousman, director of Saw II, III, IV, and no stranger to scenes of slaughter, has been caught up in his very own BitTorrent bloodbath. On the official forum for his up-coming movie Repo! the Genetic Opera, Bousman has been rallying support among his forum fans (known as the ‘Repo Army’) to become some kind of highly motivated, organic peer-to-peer version of MediaDefender.

 

Bousman details his brilliant plan in the forum post:

 

People will copy and burn the REPO CD and put it out on the web on something called TORRENT SITES. What this means to the movie is devastating. Basically - those who MIGHT have bought the soundtrack will instead download it for free… Thus hurting the soundtrack, and the movie. So what can you do?

 

Upload FAKE REPO albums to TORRENT sites under the REPO name. Meaning basically people will go online to a TORRENT site and try to search for REPO. They will find it - but alas it wont be REPO. It will be something else… If enough people do this - it becomes harder to STEAL the album.

 

Pain, something found in abundance in the Saw movies, was evident in the disorganized battle-plan that followed. Technical discussion began, noting the need for a good fake album to have the same number of tracks as the real version. Other suggestions to thwart the evil pirates include renaming and seeding random songs, and uploading audio recordings which preach the importance of buying the album.

 

After someone pointed out that people would complain about fake torrents in the comments section of torrent sites, solutions offered included the Army posting its own comments saying that the fake isn’t really a fake, and posting on real torrents to say that they were the fakes. Both techniques were doomed to fail before they began.

 

One of our favorite posts was the user who offered to spam the Ares Galaxy network on her own, and unwittingly came up with the basis of a usable slogan for the fakes campaign: “Wait a minute, did Darren just ask us to essentially Rick-Roll people in the name of Repo? Hell yes.”

 

Sadly, even with an army of completely well-intentioned and dedicated fans plus a great slogan, victory isn’t guaranteed. After posting some fake torrents on The Pirate Bay, it didn’t take long for the negative comments from regular Pirate Bay users to build up, and the torrents were removed. Despite many attempts by the Army at countering with some fake comments of their own. The ranks of the general public Repo Army went into battle against just a few pirates but were completely unprepared, and suffered a bloody end that would’ve made Jigsaw proud.

 

One user seemed to be a bit more aware, posting, “You can keep it secret or whatever method you want, it’s not going to work. You can’t fool a pirate that easy, if we just could get scene access and pre it, so it looks real.”

 

Right now, the fans have regrouped and are currently marking real Demonoid torrents as containing a virus, in order to get them removed. It doesn’t seem to be working.

 

The Repo Army doesn’t act purely against BitTorrent, since it had been previously ordered to “Attack YouTube” by messaging anyone on the site who uploads any part of the album, and ordering them to take the clip down. Some fans are even creating Repo anti-piracy videos:

In the meantime the fans have ensured that the soundtrack in question, Repo! The Genetic Opera, is currently at 22 in Amazon’s bestsellers chart, largely thanks to 25 five-star reviews, which currently represent 100% of the total reviews on this album. Apparently it’s easier to fool Amazon than the average BitTorrent site.

Exclusive: Utterli Releases Desktop Client

 

Watch out, twhirl. There’s a new sheriff in town. Utterli (formerly Utterz) has just released an Adobe Air application that delivers their audio, video and text micro-blogging messages to your desktop.

 

The app is small, but don’t be fooled because it packs a lot of features for such a little guy. Many of the most commonly used options are included, such as creating new messages, listening to audio, and watching video.

 

After logging in, the first thing you’ll see is the public timeline, which displays all of the most recent messages sent by everyone.

You can change this feed at any time by clicking view menu and choose any of four different options:

 

- All: The default public timeline with everyone’s messages

- Recent: Only messages from the friends you follow

- Inbox: Only messages sent directly to you

- Sent: Only messages that you’ve sent

 

As far as audio and video playback is concerned, the app did a decent job handling media. The quality and the performance wasn’t bad at all. The usual player functions were all there as well: pause, play, volume control.

 

 

However, some features seemed missing when it came to creating new messages with the app. For example, there’s no way to record an audio or video message at this time. All you can do is send text messages, which isn’t that bad since that’s all we can do on twirl for Twitter. It’s just that the thing that differentiates Utterli from Twitter is the fact that you can record and send audio and video messages. Perhaps they will add the ability to upload/attach an audio or video file someday if they can’t add recording capabilities. We shall see.

 

Another minor complaint is that you have to type the names of contacts and groups in their respective fields. There isn’t an auto-fill or dropdown list feature at this time. This could be a problem because it requires users to remember every contact and group name as well as their correct spelling.

 

The ability to send private messages to individuals or groups is an excellent option that will be used a great deal by everyone.

 

There’s a handy filter for Groups, which Utterli announced recently. This makes it easy to check out only those messages sent to the groups you want to view at that time. It works just like the Rooms for FriendFeed filter on the twhirl client. Once you click the Group menu you’ll see all of the groups that you belong to. After you select a group you’ll be able to get all of the audio, video and text messages from that group.

 

 

 

While the desktop app isn’t as fully functional as the Utterli website, it does provide a great deal of features in a compact little program. You can easily navigate throughout the entire Utterli system with the app, and when desired you can access the full website with the click of a button. Since this is a beta release, we can expect many more features and functionality to come in future releases. In the meantime, it’s a good way to catch up with Utterli messages outside of the browser.

Webroot, a leading provider of security solutions for the consumer, enterprise and SMB markets, today announced that it has detected a new technique being used by hackers to lure PC users to fake blog sites containing malware.

 

“For the first time, hackers are capitalizing on the top news stories from Google Trends Labs, which lists the day’s most frequently searched topics, which can include news of the Wall St. bail out or the presidential campaign,” said Paul Piccard, director of Threat Research, Webroot. “These highly relevant news stories and videos are being posted to the hackers’ fake blogs to increase the site’s Google search rankings.”

 

These fraudulent blogs contain several video links about the news story for which the users were originally searching. Once a user clicks on one of the video links, they are prompted to download a video codec that downloads a rogue antispyware program designed to goad the user into purchasing an illegitimate program that may put their personal information and data at even greater risk.

 

“Placing malware in video links on fake blogs is not a novel approach,” explained Paul Lipman, Webroot’s senior vice president and general manager of Consumer Business. “However, the fact that these hackers are now manipulating Google’s methods for relevance to increase the ranking of these sites is new and greatly increases the number of people exposed to this threat.”

 

Webroot recommends several steps to users to prevent this type of malware attack:

 

Always have a current version of antispyware, antivirus and firewall product;

Never download free product or purchase them from unknown Web sites and vendors, or peer to peer networks;

Download videos and other multimedia files only from known and trusted Web sites or blogs;

Make sure the computer is up-to-date by always installing the latest Microsoft or Apple security updates; and,

Use a credit card that has sufficient fraud protection when shopping and never use a debit card online.

Finally. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has just announced that, beginning in Spring 2009 (at least for Japan), Nintendo Wii owners will be able to download software directly to an SD card. "We have to address the console's insufficient memory storage," said Iwata, speaking at today's Nintendo Fall Press Conference. This obviously applies only to WiiWare and Virtual Console games, but hey, since they were the things clogging up your memory in the first place, it's hard to see this as anything other than good news. Not perfect news, but still, better than silence.

New Xbox 360 models have been spotted using upgraded components, said to make the infamous Red Ring of Death a thing of the past.

 

The newest 360s are fitted with new 'Jasper' motherboards, says a report on Joey Gadget, as well as a new and improved graphics chip.

 

The upgraded components are smaller and emit less heat, according to the techies, which in turn should mean no more red lights on your 360, and less postman visits to send your console off to Xbox repairs.

 

 

To be honest, we've not experienced or heard of anywhere near as many RRoD incidents over the last year anyway (apart from our launch office 360 which died last week and is now being used as a prop to raise Gav's monitor).

 

The problem behind the infamous 360 hardware failures, which cost Microsoft $1 billion in warranty extensions, has never been officially disclosed.

 

According to Gartner analyst Bryan Lewis though, the defect was down to Microsoft's decision to manufacture the 360's graphic chip itself, rather than paying a third party.

 

If you're keen to find one of the new 'Jasper' 360s, you should look for a manufacturing date as early as June 8, 2008, 'Lot 8031' and up, and 'Team CSON' on the back of the console - though you'll probably have to bribe the bloke behind the counter to see it.

Russia to deploy new nuclear missile

 

 

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia hopes to deploy a new nuclear missile next year designed to penetrate anti-missile defenses and will build eight submarines to carry it, defense officials said on Thursday.

 

The latest statements underline Moscow's determination to upgrade its nuclear strike forces on land, sea and air. They are regarded by Russian commanders as the cornerstone of the country's defenses.

 

Colonel-General Vladimir Popovkin, head of armaments for the Russian armed forces, told the Defense Ministry newspaper "Red Star" that Russia's recent war with Georgia "compels us to rethink the current state of the armed forces and how they should develop further."

 

President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have both pledged to extend Russia's recent military build-up with extra funds to buy new, high-tech arms. On Wednesday, Putin announced an extra $3.1 billion of spending next year, partly to replace equipment lost in the Georgia war.

 

Despite the billions of dollars spent on them since Putin came to power as president in 2000, Russia's 1 million-strong armed forces remain poorly equipped, badly paid and reliant on a large proportion of unwilling conscripts.

 

The deputy commander in chief of the Russian navy, Admiral Alexander Tatarinov, said on Thursday that by 2015 Moscow would build a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines to carry a new, nuclear-capable strategic missile.

 

"The navy has gone over to building ships and nuclear submarines by the batch," Tatarinov told Interfax news agency.

 

"A new state armaments program includes a plan to build a batch of eight nuclear submarines that would be armed with new Bulava strategic missiles."

Right back at ya, CAPTCHA: bad guys crack Gmail, Hotmail

 

The decline in CAPTCHA efficacy has been an ongoing story in 2008, as hackers and malware authors have steadily found ways to chip away at the protection these security practices were once thought to offer. Now, new findings indicate that both Gmail and Windows Live Hotmail have been compromised again, this time via a more-streamlined attack process. With two of the largest webmail providers once again vulnerable, CAPTCHAs clearly aren't meeting the security needs of either company, and it may be time to reevaluate the use of them altogether.

 

 

 

Gmail defeated

The latest bad news for Google comes courtesy of the malware team in charge of the XRumer project. XRumer is a blogspam tool that's particularly good at what it does, and is capable of fooling multiple CAPTCHA systems. Once it successfully registers, XRumer may take steps to avoid human detection by first posting an innocuous question regarding a specific product or service. The point of all the subterfuge is to boost the Google page rank of a site by bombarding multiple forums with product/service mentions and discussions. Users that can be tricked into posting their own links (perhaps in an attempt to demonstrate where a product may be found) only help the program perform its primary function.

 

According to the list of features that accompanies the team's latest release, XRumer 5.0a is now capable of bypassing Gmail's defenses. The list states: "Now works with gmail.com: auto-registering mailboxes, downloading letters (yes - we've 'f**d' Google Captcha ." There's no further information on how the program has accomplished this feat, but the list of CAPTCHA's it now understands and can bypass is reportedly fully up-to-date, and includes newer designs that ask the user to identify a cute cat or other distinct animal.

 

 

And Hotmail too

As for Windows Live Hotmail, Websense Security Labs has put together a step-by-step demonstration of how an existing automated anti-CAPTCHA bot goes about its business. The bot begins by hooking itself to Internet Explorer and communicating with the Hotmail sign-up servers. The anti-CAPTCHA software is prepackaged with a list of account names, which it attempts to use as the first step of the account creation process. Said list is presumably updated regularly, with successful accounts noted and unacceptable/pre-existing accounts scratched off. Our little darling of a program then spins off a second instance of IEXPLORE.EXE, and attempts to connect with the actual CAPTCHA-breaking host. As we've previously discussed, CAPTCHA-breaking is a huge business in nations like India, where workers will input thousands of CAPTCHAs per day in exchange for a minuscule amount of money per CAPTCHA successfully decoded.

 

The CAPTCHA is sent off, decoded, sent back, and handed over to Hotmail in what is presumably the correct form. Unlike what we saw in the initial CAPTCHA-breaks earlier this year, the communication between host and client is now scrambled, presumably to make the CAPTCHA-cracking process harder to detect. Received image files are stored on the victim's hard drive, and while such images are tiny individually, a program that has been in operation for weeks or months might still accumulate a suspiciously large number of JPG files in a single directory. Whether or not the user notices (or even knows how to check for hidden directories), of course, depends on his or her skill set. Websense's screenshot of the files implies that they are all prefixed with "mmh" for now, but such information is only of minimal use if the goal is to track the proliferation and existence of these files.

 

Once the CAPTCHA is cracked and an account created, it's business as usual for the bot in question. E-mail addresses are entered, spam messages are sent, and the bot logs out to begin the entire process all over again. Apart from detecting the malware in operation and/or stopping it from completing its task, there doesn't seem to be much the security industry can do to prevent this procedure from working indefinitely. Researchers are continuing to develop advanced CAPTCHA concepts—we saw an image-based system earlier this year—but the entire point of a CAPTCHA was that it offered a relatively simple task that a human could do but a computer couldn't.

 

The human touch

Instead of trying to build better CAPTCHA-cracking programs, the malware industry went out and got itself some humans of its own. This effectively bypasses the primary security strength of the CAPTCHA system and leaves it entirely dependent on what we'll call secondary security characteristics. CAPTCHAs are often complex (particularly these days), which does increase the chance that they'll be misread (and returned incorrectly), while the font and display of the characters themselves are at least somewhat unfamiliar to the CAPTCHA crackers sitting on the other side of the world. A number of websites have attempted to counter the CAPTCHA-crackers by imposing a timeline on how quickly the CAPTCHA must be entered, but this inevitably degrades how complex the CAPTCHA can actually be. The puzzle, after all, has to hang around long enough for legitimate users to decode it—even the slow ones. It's entirely possible that the time-to-decode between the two groups (legitimate and crackers) overlaps considerably—there may not be a time slice that can cleanly separate the two.

 

As for the other two secondary characteristics, both can be overcome through sheer repetition, and that's precisely what the bot networks are doing. If brand-new Worker A in Mumbai can't read CAPTCHA number one, send him 100 more. Not only will he get some right (crackers must be able to decode a certain percentage of CAPTCHAs correctly within x amount of time in order to work in the industry at all), he'll also become increasingly proficient as time goes by. This doesn't just increase his chance of returning the correct CAPTCHA, it increases the chance that he'll return the correct CAPTCHA within the necessary time period.

 

This is one security problem that may not have a practical solution. There's no theoretical reason why researchers couldn't build CAPTCHAs that rely on verbal, audio, contextual, or even cultural understandings, but the websites and services that rely on such authentication systems will inevitably be restricted to those who understand the context of the CAPTCHA. A CAPTCHA that asked would-be users to name the equivalent Greek god when presented with a Roman name, for example, would certainly confound a number (though not all) of current CAPTCHA-breakers, but it would also confound any legitimate user who was unfamiliar with the necessary mythology. Even if you know that Diana and Artemis are considered equivalent goddesses of the hunt, chastity, and the moon, would you know that she was also considered to be an Etruscan goddess, Artumes?

 

Websense reports that the bot in question successfully creates a Hotmail account once out of every eight to ten tries. If we were talking about a small group of people, such a low success rate might not be worth the trouble, but the larger organizations in India are advertising themselves as capable of breaking 700,000 CAPTCHAs (or more) per day. Lower numbers, in the 25,000-50,000 range are more common, but even if we start at just 25,000 and take a 10 percent success rate, that's still one small company churning out 2,500 successful e-mail spam accounts per day. Start ramping even that minimum estimate up by the number of CAPTCHA-breakers in India and the growing popularity of the field (Surprise: "Ralph," in customer service over at Dell doesn't like talking to you, either), and a one-of-eight to one-of-ten crack rate starts looking pretty good. Longer term, that rate is only headed up

Fring Enables VoIP Calls Over Wi-Fi for iPhone with Skype Support

 

Fring has released the iPhone version of their service today as a free download in the App Store.

 

 

Fring allows you to chat and interact with others on a variety of networks including Skype, MSN, GoogleTalk, AIM, Yahoo, Twitter, and ICQ. In addition, Fring offers Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) using the iPhone's Wi-Fi connection. Features listed include:

 

• VoIP (Voice) Calls over WiFi

• Instant Messaging

• Integrated dynamic contact list 
with real-time contact availability

• SIP integration

• Multiple Connection types

Steve Jobs had said that VoIP calls over Wi-Fi was allowable in the App Store when the iPhone SDK was first released. Fring should also work with the new iPod touch, which supports an external microphone.

 

Update: Some are confused about the benefits of fring. One user details some of the features:

- Call MSN or Skype users that are using their computer

- Call using Skype account, which allows you to have your own Skype number and at a discount rate for international calls

Open Document Format made national standard in Sweden

 

The Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) approved the Open Document Format (ODF) as a national standard, the ODF Alliance reported this week.

 

“Sweden now joins Brazil, Croatia, Italy, South Korea, and South Africa as countries whose national Swedish Flagstandards bodies have formal approved this standard”, the ODF advocacy organisation writes in this week’s newsletter.

 

SIS press officer Erika Messing called the approval “routine”. SIS was one of the national standardisation organisations that took part in the procedure at ISO to approve ODF, she said. “ISO approved it in 2006 and now SIS has made it a national standard.”

 

Messing adds that all standards are voluntary to use. European standards are mandatory to implement as national standards but they are still voluntary to use.

 

SIS in 2007 also took part in the controversial ISO procedure on a competitor for ODF, Microsoft’s proposal for electronic documents, OOXML. Sweden was one of the countries where irregularities took place in the OOXML procedure.

Etter hva vi forstår er det vanskelig å finne noe slikt, ettersom forumet er fylt opp til kanten av tråder som kun er laget i håp om å oppnå det vi kaller "forumære".

Det er ikke lett å oppnå denne statusen. Det krever tilstrekkelige skrivekunskaper, kanskje til og med et lite innblikk i hva folk er intressert i, eller noe så enkelt som litt flaks og posting til rett tid. En ting er ihvertfall sikkert; kjenskap til de fantastiske kombinasjonene av ctrl + c og ctrl +v er kanskje ikke den rette veien å ta. En fantastisk måte å spre infomasjon, det er sikkert. Samt også en måte å spre det vi idag kaller søppel. Eller for enkelte kalt spam.

Nok er nok sier Joney og legger tastaturet på hylla. "Nå stikker jeg ut og tar meg en øl".

New Charges Filed Against Alleged Cyber Peeping Tom

 

Federal prosecutors are going after a Florida college student who allegedly installed spyware on a woman's laptop to covertly snap nude photos of her through her webcam.

 

 

Craig Matthew Feigin, 23, is charged (.pdf) in U.S. District Court in Gainesville with violating the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Feigin was arrested by local police last July.

 

The case began when the victim noticed changes in her computer's behavior after giving it to Feigin for overnight repairs, the Gainesville Sun reported at the time. Every time she got near her laptop, the light on her webcam switched on.

 

A friend with IT experience examined the system, and found that someone had installed the remote access program Log Me In, and software called Web Cam Spy Hacker, which Feigin himself sold online as a tool for catching cheating spouses. Over three weeks, the software allegedly uploaded some 20,000 images of the woman to an Eastern European web server before it was detected.

 

Feigin reportedly told police he'd pulled the same scam on eight or nine other women. A federal magistrate issued an arrest warrant for Feigin on September 23.

 

Two Pennsylvania men are in trouble this week for electronic snooping of a different sort. Artur Grigoryan and Artur Hurutyunyan allegedly persuaded an associate to take a job as a clerk at the local Rite Aid in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Once there, she installed a skimming device inside the debit card pad at the cash register, which began scooping up ATM card numbers and PINs from drug store customers.

Sega Returning to the Hardware Biz with Vision PMP for 2009

 

 

Sony's PSP is currently getting its butt handed to it by the Nintendo DS, but don't tell that to Sega. With its upcoming Sega Vision PMP, due out in the UK sometime in 2009, the former hardware company-turned-sub par software maker is hoping to take on the jack-of-all-trades portable market. The prognosis for such a device is OK, but then again how could it not be? After all, this is the company that brought us the 32X, Saturn, and the Dreamcast—the only direction any Sega hardware offering could go from this point forward is up.

 

As the comments about this device over at the Register suggest, this is one butt-ugly portable that probably shouldn't have been compared to the PSP, let alone a DS. The "games" it plays are actually Java-based affairs, and its strengths, should they materialize in 2009, would be as a portable TV, movie player, camera, and even an eBook reader.

 

It's a device you should probably watch in the dark or after a few pints, but it does in fact mark a return to the hardware business for Sega after two generations away from the game. We're just having trouble figuring out what the hook is. Consumers aren't likely to be swayed by simple branding, Sega's storied history or not.

Nintendo DSi Software Is Region Locked, So Don't Import One Unless You Know Japanese

 

 

Nintendo has confirmed that both downloadable games and DSi-exclusive software will be region-locked, meaning Japanese games won't play on an American DSi and vice versa. Regular DS games, on the other hand, will continue to be universal, and you'll still be able to play Japanense imports of regular DS games on say, an American DSi. That sucks, because it means if you import a DSi from Japan to skip the longass wait for the US version, you're going to be stuck buying Japanese DSi games forever, not to mention killing the import market. Maybe there's hope yet lurking in that SD card slot though.

Mail Goggles Prevent You From Sending Drunken E-Mails

 

 

You know how it goes: it’s the weekend, all your friends are busy with their own affairs, you’re bored and slightly inebriated, and what do you do: you come home and start sending e-mails you’ll later probably regret. Actually, I’m more of an SMS sender with this regard, but regardless of the medium, we all know how bad it feels the morning after when you’re afraid to check out the “sent messages” folder.

 

To fix this, there’s a funny new feature from Gmail Labs. Called Mail Goggles, it activates only late at night (you can, of course, set the time of activation as you please) and over the weekend, and gives you a couple of math problems to solve before your e-mail is sent.

 

 

Now, although this feature sounds like something you might converse about over a coffee but never actually use, I’m sure that many late night e-mail senders will eventually realize that it’s better to get frustrated with your inability to solve a simple math puzzle than to be sorry the morning after.

 

There is, however, one fundamental flaw with the feature. However drunk I may be, I’m sure I’ll always be able to switch the damn thing off in the settings. For the real deal, you should be required to solve an equally hard math puzzle to be able to switch the feature off, otherwise it won’t stop anyone from sending anything.

If researchers at Boston University's College of Engineering have their way, light bulbs of the future may be the highway your data gets carried along. A team at the school is working on low-power LEDs which could utilize an optical communication system to carry data wirelessly. Using a technique which rapidly switches the LEDs on and off data transmissions could be made via imperceptible -- yet undoubtedly brain-scrambling -- flickering patterns, and each light would be its own network entry point at speeds of 1 to 10Mbps. The concept is more secure than current RF techniques because it requires linked devices be in line-of-sight, and the technology would draw far less energy than conventional radios. Says professor Thomas Little, "Imagine if your computer, iPhone, TV, radio and thermostat could all communicate with you when you walked in a room just by flipping the wall light switch and without the usual cluster of wires." Yes... and talk about you behind your back. And plot your "accidental" death after taking out a large life insurance policy on you. You won't get away with this LED network!

Introducing Geode

 

Always know where you are.

 

You’ve arrived in a new city, a new continent, a new coffee shop. You don’t really know where you are, and are looking for a good place to eat. You pull out your laptop, fire up Firefox, and go to your favorite review site. It automatically deduces your location, and serves up some delicious suggestions a couple blocks away and plots directions there.

 

In order for this to be a possibility, your browser needs to know where you are.

 

To do this, future versions of Firefox plan on supporting the new W3C Geolocation Specification, which adds the native ability for Web sites to request, and you to optionally grant access to, your location. We’re still working out the specifics, but we’re hoping that location will be provided by one or more user selectable service providers and methods, e.g. GPS-based, WiFi-based, manual entry, etc. You’ll be able to play with this in the upcoming beta releases of Firefox 3.1, as well as alpha releases of Fennec.

 

We realized, though, that some of our Firefox 3 users might also want to get a head start playing with gelocation Today.

 

Introducing Geode, an experimental add-on to explore geolocation in Firefox 3 ahead of the implementation of geolocation in a future product release. Geode provides an early implementation of the W3C Geolocation specification so that developers can begin experimenting with enabling location-aware experiences using Firefox 3 today, and users can tell us what they think of the experience it provides. It includes a single experimental geolocation service provider so that any computer with WiFi can get accurate positioning data.

 

The potential here is for more than just resturant lookups. For example, imagine an RSS reader that knows the difference between home and work and automatically changes it’s behavior appropriately. Or a news site whose local section is, in fact, actually local. Or Web site authentication that only allows you to login from certain physical locations, like your house.

 

What else will location make possible? Even if you can’t code, you can share your thoughts by commenting on this post or via the Concept Series, a forum for surfacing, sharing, and collaborating on new ideas and concepts.

 

 

How It Works & Privacy Implications

With Geode when a web site requests your location a notification bar will ask how much information you want to give that site: your exact location, your neighborhood, your city, or nothing at all.

 

 

We’re using Skyhook’s Loki technology to map the Wifi signals in your area to your location. Unlike normal GPS-based methods which can take upwards of 45 seconds for a lock, Geode works both inside and outside with an accuracy of between 10 to 20 meters, normally within a second.

 

Please note that in this early implementation, both location and IP information is sent to the current provider, Skyhook, everytime a website is granted access to your location. Skyhook’s privacy policy is that they do not store or use any personal identifying information, and they promise to only keep data in anonymized agregate. The ultimate plan for Firefox is that service providers and geolocation methods will be pluggable and user selectable — to provide users with as many choices and privacy options as possible.

 

As an experiment, Geode is also the beginning of a conversation about location-based privacy and integrating services that share personal data into Web browsers.

Pownce is a service that makes it easy to send stuff (music, photos, events, and messages) to your friends. Adding the power of location — where you are when you uploaded a photo or sent a message — paints a compelling picture that helps you discover friends and activities around you. Yahoo! Fire Eagle is a service that acts as a broker for your location, creating a single place where any web service, from any device can get access to your last updated location. Fire Eagle integrates with Geode so that you’ll never have to manually enter your location again. Once you have a Fire Eagle account, you can see Geode working here.

 

Differences between Geode and Geolocation in Firefox 3.1

Geode and the Geolocation Services in Firefox 3.1 will use the same W3C API for Geolocation, meaning that the same Javascript code will work in both. The still-in-developement Firefox 3.1 version will allow the user to choose a geolocation service provider, which can either be a peripheral device like a GPS, or a web-based service provider like we’ve used in Geode. We’ll be using the feedback we get from Geode, as well as the feedback we see on the upcoming Firefox 3.1 Beta and Fennec Alpha releases, to refine the feature before shipping it in a future Mozilla product release. We’re particularly interested in ensuring that the final implementation is as sensitive to user privacy and choice as possible.

 

Get Involved

We’ve implemented a portion of the tentative W3C Specification for Geolocation that we’ve been collaborating on. This means that if you add geolocation to your site for use with Geode, it’s future-proofed to work when Firefox (and other browsers) bundle geolocation.

 

Using Geode on your site as simple as:

Buy Stuff “As Seen On YouTube” With New Click-to-Buy Platform

 

How many times have you seen a YouTube video and just had to buy a product or a service related to the video? Ok, never. But still, if you want to spend your hard earned cash in these times of looming recession, now you can do it directly from YouTube.

 

 

Thousands of YouTube partner videos will now get click-to-buy links, which appear on the watch page beneath the video, right there with the other community features, like share, favorite, or flag. For starters, iTunes and Amazon.com links will be embedded on videos from media companies such as EMI Music - I cannot see it, because it apparently works only in the United States. Google says that they’ll slowly expand this program to international users, too.

 

 

Google promises that this is just the beginning of a broad e-commerce platform from which both users and partners will benefit. Partners who use YouTube’s content identification and management system can enable these links on user-generated content, if they use Content ID to claim videos and choose to leave them up on the site. So, next time you create that viral video, kids, make sure that it features a lots of enticing products which your viewers might want to buy.

 

From the user perspective, maybe sometime in the future this turns out to be the key of making YouTube profitable, but currently it’s just a bunch of simple “buy me” links which are far from earth shattering.

AC/DC Black Ice Album Leaked Online!

 

 

Sometime late last night or early this morning (depending on your time zone) AC/DC's Black Ice was leaked on one of the BitTorrent sites and I'm sure it will quickly become one of the most popular downloads around. A couple of hours ago, the complete album was also uploaded to YouTube.

 

SonyBMG/Columbia Records are probably in the midst of attempting heavy damage control right about now as their hopes to keep the album under wraps have been forever dashed nearly two weeks before the official release date of October 20th.

In other news of interest, Sirius XM has announced they're giving one lucky winner a free trip to AC/DC's special rehearsal show on October 26. You may enter the contest here if you're a legal resident of the contiguous United States and are at least 21 years of age.

Ny verdensrekord i Lego bygging

 

460,000-Brick Lego Tower Breaks World Record

 

 

At 96.73 feet (29.485 meters) this Lego tower built in the Rathaus Platz in Vienna has broken the world record for the tallest Lego construction in the world. It took nearly 460,000 bricks and it was built over four days. The views from the top are quite stunning.

 

The tower included 121 plates designed and built by 3,000 kids using 2 x 4 Lego bricks. The kids participated in the building process to celebrate 100 Years of the Friends of Children festival in Austria. The previous Guinness World Record was set at 96.13-feet (29.3 meters), last May in Legoland Windsor.
